Default Anyone else irritated that PS3-40G isn't backwards compatible

I bought the PS3 and according the the advertisement, it will play PS2 games. I even asked the guy at Best Buy and he confirmed it. Well after speaking with Sony... All PS3's are backwards compatible except the 40G version. WTF. Why would they do such a stupid thing. I have so many games on PS2 that I want to buy. Now I have to buy a PS2 to be able to play them. Thanks Sony...

I would be upset about the salesman who said that, but I wouldnt be mad at Sony. Everyone always wants thing to be cheaper. That is one of the ways that Sony dropped the price of the PS3, is by making a version that is not backwards compatible. There will be a new 80gb coming out June 12th that is $100 more, it will be backwards compatible, bundled with a game, and a dualshock 3 controller. Pretty good deal!!!

Take it back and wait until June 12 for the MGS bundle. It will play PS2 games. If they try to fight you, argue that the sales person lied to you and said you could play PS2 games and that is one of the main reasons you purchased the system.

And the 40gb is backwards compat.... with PS1 games.

It's unfortunate you bought the wrong console model since you wanted backward compatibility. However, except for this current transition period to the Dual Shock 3 controller, Sony always has a model that is backward compatible.

If you can, return your 40 gig model and wait for the new 80 gig model. It will be released in less than two weeks.

Yeah... I'm not too happy as well.... I've gotten rid of most of my PS2 games as well.

My wife bought the Buzz Quiz TV for the PS2 because she loves trivia games/board games. She later found out our PS3 would not be able to play the game and she would have to wait for the ps3 version to come out eventually. She's lost a little faith in the PS3 because of so. So I'm right with there with you on the backwards compatibility(lack thereof). Not sure why Sony wont just update the 40gb ps3 for the software emulation.

No, because proper research made it clear that the 40G PS3 is NOT backwards compatible. Proper research also made it clear that the 40G PS3 does not play SACD, along with other things that were different between it and the other models.

I kept my old PS2 around just in case I want to play old games, but really, I haven't played a PS2 game in years, so no issue for me.

Sorry you didn't do enough research to know this before you bought. And yeah, the BB guy was stupid or uninformed for saying that it was, but seriously, Sony was not hiding the fact that the 40G model had these features removed to lower the cost. All you had to do was go to their website and it spells it out clearly:

"Q: What is the difference between the 80GB and 40GB configurations?

A: Both the 80GB and 40GB PS3 models come standard with Cell Broadband Engine™ (Cell/B.E.), Blu-ray Disc™ (BD) player, built-in HDD, 1080p high-definition output, Wi-Fi connectivity and SIXAXIS™ wireless controller.

In addition to the larger HDD capacity, the 80GB model focuses on offering the incredible graphic quality, stunning gameplay, improved audio and visual fidelity that PS3 games are known for by maintaining the PlayStation®2 backwards compatibility through software instead of hardware. The 40GB model does not have PS2 backwards compatibility, although does maintain backwards compatibility for original PlayStation titles. The 40GB PS3 has 2 USB ports, where the 80GB PS3 has 4 USB ports. In addition, the 40GB PS3 does not have the multi-media memory card slots. Consumers can use a variety of after-market accessories for transferring their media to PS3 via the USB ports."

The box of the 40 gig does not say anything about PS2 playback capabilty, nor did Sony.
This time around, it was your own mis-read and a mis-judgement from that Best Buy employee. You're own fault.

My advice like others, if you want backward capabilty, wait for the 80gig one, coming in June 12.

If you were mislead into buying the wrong system, return it and get the 80GB Metal Gear Solid 4 pack (June 12th) if you're willing to pay the extra $100.

I'm extremely pissed off about this. Just shows how much of a rich, greedy company Sony are. Why would anyone buy a PS3 with the intention of playing games, if it wasn't backwards compatable? Some of my favourite games ever are PS2 games (Gun, Jak and Daxter 1, Dark Alliance, Dark Alliance 2). *******s.

I hope my sarcasm detector was malfunctioning. For a second there, I thought you were serious.

I really don't get it. Sony's whole strategy was to give people a clear choice with identifiable feature differences at the two price points. Sony's intention was not to dupe anyone, and it seems pretty clear.

It's definitely not rocket science.

Because BC is a nice feature to have. Why do you need two systems when one can do the job of both? Especially if you have limited space. There are many people that enjoy playing old games, or maybe had a PS2 crap out on them and they want a PS3 to take its place.

And that's why they have the other models with BC. The point is simple: the consumer who wishes BC should do research so they get the right model. Period. End of story.

Complaining that the 40G model doesn't have BC is stoopid because Sony is not trying to hide that it is one of the features they took out to make the model affordable. If someone wants BC, there's a model that can do it, albeit a more expensive model. If that's important to you, ante up and pay the piper.
