It's a loud pop (like you described) that sounds like a gunshot. It happens on Blu-rays with a DTS-HD MA soundtrack. Now, because you're using a Blu-ray player that bitstreams the signal to the receiver, the receiver is doing all the decoding for the sound. This is where your pop comes into play. Onkyo, Integra and Yamaha receivers are the only ones known to do this, but some movies will have a pop in some parts. You will need a firmware update to fix this problem.

Just wanted to say thanks for the heads-up on this. This sounds like exactly what is happening. Looks like it's time to upgrade the firmware.

I have heard the same pop through my set up as well. It only happens when I play a bluray. I hear the pop even on dolby digital soundtracks as well. I have a Sony 300 bluray play and an older Yamaha receiver. I have updated to the newest firmware as well.
