Aclea states correctly that none of the new material is useful to the film, and most of it detracts. Also, importantly, there was no discovery of a 'missing 40 minutes'. Rather, the extended edition inserts some new scenes that have been recently and rather haphazardly edited together using a rough dupe of the camera negatives as a source. Calling the extended version a "director's cut" would be false advertising and I can't see that making the final artwork. But as long as they include a newly remastered, properly graded copy of Leone's 229 minute final director's cut from Cannes '84 I'll be happy.

I may have missed it, but will this be the 5+ hour version of the film?

When is this expected to be released (a longer than 229 minute disc, that is)?

It would be awesome if the new Blu-ray contains the cut found on the current one and the new extended cut as well as better A/V

Posted elsewhere but it won't hurt to bump this thread, has anything new been announced as to a release date or content? As far as I can tell, everything else on Akijama's original post has been announced or has already been released.

Do you not think it likely that if anything had been announced it would have been mentioned in this still active thread?

There may be some good news.

It's recently been reported that the MPAA have given a R rating to the extended version of the movie.

This may indicate that Warner Home Video are making some progress in their plans to release the extended version in the USA.

Any word if this is actually a new transfer or are they just recycling in some way?

So I'm guessing this is the Cannes 245 minute version of the film?

Hopefully, we get a nice restoration and not the Italian master.

Oh, well that's cool then.

I wonder how WB is going to deal with the less than stellar quality of the deleted scenes.

Warner is astoundingly cheap when it comes to new transfers, so I do wonder here. I just hope we don't get the current theatrical version transfer integrated with the deleted scenes to form the extended cut. Ugh.

Could you give us the link?

My understanding is that the Cannes cut was 269 minutes but the Italian BD release was only 244 (with awful quality for the "extra" scenes). I would absolutely love to see the 269 minute cut, fully restored. I hope this is the real deal.

I think OUATIA is one of the greatest films ever made.

Very interesting. Today, the Film Society of Lincoln Center announced today, that they will be screening the extended version, as part of the 52nd New York Film Festival, this September. Their press release stated that this version of the film "includes 22-minutes of restored footage, never before seen in the United States." This would indicated that the cut that will be screened, will be 251 minutes (229 + 22). Knowing this, I would be very surprised if the Blu-ray contains the full 269 minute cut.

So, you might not want to get your hopes up.

The Cannes cut was 244 minutes, though it was initially announced to be 269 minutes.

Ok, so I'm confused. This release will include the current 229 minute version and the new extended? If so, that is great news. If this new version is anything like the extended TGTBATU, then I'll watch it once and realize I vastly prefer the other cut.

They are cheap when doing double dip re-releases. Arguably the worst, since they have taken so many old discs and then released them as "digibooks" or "collectors editions" for a ridiculous premium.

I don't think they are so bad at doing new transfers. Or at least not as bad as some other studios - lets face it, they all have their misses.
