Insurgent - March 20, 2015

Following the success of the first “Divergent” movie at the box office, the studio has just announced that it plans to start filming on a sequel as soon as possible, in order to have it ready for theaters by March 20, 2015.

According to MTV, the movie is going to be directed by Robert Schwentke, who's also done the movie “R.I.P.D.” He will be taking over from Neil Burger and the film will be based on a script written by Brian Duffield and Akiva Goldsman.

“Insurgent” will start filming in May of this year and it will see Shailene Woodley reprise the title role in this young adult book adaptation. There is a third part scheduled to be released, called “Allegiant,” that is going to turn the franchise into a trilogy. The third part is slated to be released in March 2016.

After pocketing nearly $5 million at the box office already, experts in the industry believe “Divergent” has a very good shot to finish the weekend with a $60 million box office take, which would make it the year's second successful weekend debut, after “The LEGO Movie.”

Jon Feltheimer, CEO for the studio, confirmed the news of the sequel. “We’re confident that Divergent is on its way to becoming another important franchise for us, and we have just greenlit the second film, Insurgent.”

Oscar winner Octavia Spencer will play Johanna, the leader of the Amity faction, in the second installment of Lionsgate/Summit’s Divergent franchise. Insurgent, the second of four pics, will be released March 20, 2015. Shailene Woodley, Theo James and Kate Winslet return from the first movie, which has surpassed $250M in worldwide box office and is Lionsgate’s highest-grossing domestic release since The Hunger Games and Twilight series. Insurgent raises the stakes for Tris (Woodley) as she searches for allies and answers in the dystopian ruins of a futuristic Chicago while on the run with Four (James) and hunted by the leader of the power-hungry Erudite elite (Winslet). Spencer, repped by WME and Jackoway Tyerman, has upcoming the James Brown biopic Get On Up and Snowpiercer and stars in the Fox pilot Red Band Society that was just picked up to series.

Also, word on the street is Weston's character Edgar is not someone from the novel, or at least not someone explicitly named in the novel.

Though Lionsgate hasn't said too much about his character.

Well, they made a lot of changes, which in this case resulted in the movie being better than the book. Pretty brave, considering how closely the Harry Potter, Twilight, and Hunger Games movies stuck to the books.

I feel the same way. I could not get into the Divergent novels, but I loved the movie.

Naomi Watts has signed on to join the next three films in Lionsgate's Divergent franchise.

The actress ... is joining the cast of Divergent sequel Insurgent as Evelyn, leader of the Factionless. Watts' deal calls for to co-star in the futuristic franchise's two final movies, which are based on Veronica Roth's YA novel Allegiant, the final book in the Divergent trilogy.

It's a way to keep costs down while still having "famous" people in your movie.

Man, this cast keeps getting better and better.

Say what you want about Lionsgate, but they definitely know how to court A-List stars, oscar nominees, and oscar winners to their films.

For the most part, the new castmembers play major supporting roles in both Insurgent and Allegiant.
