Duel

The man is vastly vastly vastly overrated. He is nowhere near one of the best.

I'm trying to start anything but how can you say he's not one of the best?? His list of movies is insane....Everything he touches seems to turn to gold, and not just his newers stuff but even his early works....I'm not a huge Spielberg fan but I have to appreciate what he has done for the Industry...

Who do you consider to be one of the best?

I am not trying to start anything either, cause I am sure almost everyone on this forumn disagrees but His movies just arent very good. I like Indiana Jones and thats about it. Just cause his movies make a ton of money doesnt mean shit to me.

Who I would consider the best filmmakers
Shuji Terayama
Andrei Tarkovsky
Jean Luc Godard
John Cassavetes
Yasujiro Ozu
John Carpenter
Peter Watkins
Phillipe Garrel
Samuel Fuller
Seijun Suzuki
Werner Herzog
Terrence Malick
Billy Wilder
Alejandro Jodorowsky
Luis Bunuel
Michelangelo Antonioni
Robert Bresson
Luchino Visconti
Kar Wai Wong

among others.....

The only one I recognize from your list is John Carpenter and his name holds a negative connotation for me as I saw his work in Vampires. Though don't get me wrong I enjoyed a few of his movies, but that one was just a huge stain over his career IMO.

I come from a strong military background so Saving Private Ryan is my favorite Spielberg film. I don't have a favorite film of all time because I'll grow tired of anything if I have too much of it.

Jaws, Jurassic Park, Raiders of the Lost Ark. Those are the top three of SS films for me.

I love The Goonies, but must point out that Spielberg did not direct that movie - he's the producer. Dick Donner directed The Goonies. (If we're counting movies that Spielberg produced, we might as well throw Transformers on the list.)

I must admit that that is an interesting list. I'm aware of quite a few of these guys, and I'm sure you realize that most of these directors did not distribute films in the U.S., and so their work in not well known.

But when you make a list this big, it draws attention to the guys you didn't mention. It is interesting that your small list of Americans doesn't include notables such as Hitchcock, Scorsese, Kubrick, Ford, Coppola, Welles, etc, and omitted some international notables like Kurosawa, Bergman, Fellini, Eisenstein, Renoir...

But, to each his own.

Absolutely love that movie.

Any of the Indy flicks...a few others.

Jurrasic park I.

I like his work.

Some of it is give and take though.

Well yea, I admire almost eveyone else you mentioned especially John Ford, Stanley Kubrick and Orson Welles. I Like Bergman and Kurosawa but find Fellini and Renoir overrated. Its just personal preference really.

Well then perhaps we're not that far off. If your point was that there are obscure directors that are more skilled as film craftsmen than some of the box office kings like Spielberg, then I would agree there.

But at the same time, there are few Spielberg films that I can't sit down and enjoy. And some of Spielberg's more serious stuff is worthy of acclaim.

Well see I agree with some of that, but I don't think most of his movies are worthy of the acclaim. Just my opinion. I think his best movies were before he got so obsessed with specticle and focused on solid filmmaking: I.e. Duel. And films like Saving Private Ryan and Schindlers list are alright, but there are far far far far far far better films about the subject matter..

Jurassic Park is my favorite film of all time. It holds a very special place in my heart. Truly one of the only theater going experiences I remember from my childhood. But other favorites from him include: E.T., Indy movies, Jaws, The Lost World and War of the Worlds. I am sure there are more as well.

Jaws -- Why ask why? It's only one of the greatest thrillers ever made!

Close Encounters of the Third Kind -- A classic in every way possible!

All 4 Indiana Jones movies (Raiders of the Lost Ark in 1st place!) -- Harrison Ford, Sean Connery, Karen Allen, Kate Capshaw, and the late River Phoenix. Who could ask for anything more than that?!

Jurassic Park -- Couldn't take my eyes off the screen for a second!

Saving Private Ryan -- Best war film of all time! Made me cry a little bit also (I admit it!).

Schindler's List -- A hard film to watch, but still a very involving film nonetheless.

A.I. Artificial Intelligence -- Once again, a very underrated film next to Schindler's List. Haley Joel Osment's best performance since The Sixth Sense!

Munich -- A very underrated, yet powerful film compared to Schindler's List.

The Terminal, Catch Me If You Can -- Hey, you gotta laugh sometimes!

Whenever anyone asks me what my favorite movie is, I just tell them this: "Anything that's directed by Steven Spielberg."

These include all the major theatrical motion pictures he's directed, from THE SUGARLAND EXPRESS to READY PLAYER ONE (except for TWILIGHT ZONE: THE MOVIE, because Spielberg only directed one segment, and not the whole movie). Of course, I love DUEL as well, but it was only released theatrically overseas; originally, it was a made-for-TV movie.
