![]() (Just saying, though, I don't know anybody who watched USA during prime time hours. The afternoon cartoons, yes, but...) |

So much of my elementary and middle school years were spent watching any and all horror movies on USA, HBO, Cinemax and The Movie Channel with Joe Bob Briggs (and later on TNT MonsterVision). Probably some of the best times of my life and really shaped a lot of the interests I still have to this day.

I discovered so many films via these programs; and had a lot of good times watching them too. |

I also watched Monstervision. Most of the movies they showed weren't very good but if you tempered your expectations and went into it with the right mindset there was enjoyment to be had.
Joe Bob was very entertaining. I remember one night when they showed the "It's Alive" series he would say "it's killer mutant baby night" as often as he could. He was also a fan of Charles Napier and tried to get him to come on the show, which he eventually did. I can't remember which of his movies they showed that night though. No matter what the quality of the movies were, Joe Bob always tried to champion them along with the actors, like Charles Napier, who appeared in them. That was cool. |

About 80 miles northwest of Chicago is a city called Rockford, Illinois, where in the 1980's the local station (Channel 39) had a weekly show called "Uncle Don's Terror Theatre." The show played old horror movies and featured this guy with glasses and a bow tie, who interacted with a stuffed shark named Sharkey. Uncle Don would talk to and also provide the voice for Sharkey, as well as; performing skits, answering viewer mail, and providing goofy commentary about the movie before commercial breaks. Many of the movies were awful but, it was a fun show to watch when I was a kid.
I have been able to find a couple of clips from this show on You Tube, unfortunately they are low quality and are from the end of the shows run, when they strayed away from the Horror aspect and changed the name to "Uncle Don's Theatre." I hope somebody will eventually post clips from the earlier shows, during the height of Uncle Don's popularity. |
