Although I suppose the same could be said for Australia. The R rating here is pretty much the equivalent of NC-17 over there. R rated movies are shown in cinemas, usually with some scenes cut out and restored for the DVD release. There aren't very much Aus. R rated horror movies being released nowadays, mostly just MA.

The question on that though is, are most of them horror movies even worth watching?

The whole horror movie thing is another rant by it self
