The reason for people's surprise with the high price points for a number of blu-rays is because these are not common prices. And of course usually there are reasons for the higher price like with Demons, this, and Possession (to name a few more recent ones) - but it doesn't make the higher price point easy to swallow for everyone. Again becasue it's not the norm - like it was for laserdisc - it's a different mind set now, with the advent of DVD/Blu-ray, where movies can be had for much more affordable prices.
IMO it's a perfectly relevant discussion as that's not the case anymore. Between Twilight Time, Shout, even Kino now getting involved in catalog titles, that "much more affordable" price tag is going up. Some by a few dollars more than others, but the general trend is upwards. Given the state of the industry, BD is growing more like laserdisc by the day -- and it's not going to change. Major studios aren't going to come back to the format in droves...they're moving away from it, at least as far as these type of releases go (sadly), and smaller labels are picking up the slack. At least there are more of them than in the laserdisc era.

Ordered the LE last night and got billed already. Not news but I wonder which way they read my card since it's both credit/debit...

Also, where can I grab the cabal cut? Amazon only has Clive barker's Cabal from Italy

Physical media is quickly becoming a niche as streaming and other online platforms begin to take hold (thanks to the newest generation not giving a f**k about owning hard copies of anything). A consequence of that will be higher prices for BDs even for deep catalog titles. I agree that the majors won't go back to the peak days of releasing fully-loaded DVDs (BDs today) because of the pushback but I was hoping that the smaller labels wouldn't resort to overpricing their releases to ride the coattails of what's happening. In the case of the Nightbreed, I believe Shout is going WAY beyond the "recoup licensing costs by charging more" argument. Eighty bucks is A LOT of money for a single film, even for folks who don't usually grumble about prices (like me). I'm a sucker for limited editions and collectible packaging (and have enough disposable cash) so I will more than likely grab a copy but there will come a time when I'll say "enough is enough" and stop indulging.

If you don't want to pay the $80, get the regular version. There's a reason they call it "Limited Edition". Also, all the work they put into restoring the Cabal cut is still part of the regular edition. Probably the reason the LE version is so much is for licensing fees from Warner Brothers just to put out the theatrical version, so the large price is to have the theatrical version in your collection. It's been mentioned so many times, in this thread no less, that WB rarely licenses out films so they likely paid a pretty penny. Scream Factory probably didn't think people would get the LE without extra incentive at that price so they're also putting more effort into the LE extras to justify the price.

Ironic that I could quit Vicodin cold (after getting good and hooked for a couple years), but not resist this. So which is really worse? It does help not having spent that $80 on drugs though.

Just imagine if this had been reversed, with the extended cut exclusive to the LE. Think people are *****ing now?

The Cabal cut was a version of the movie they sent around to film festivals after they reinserted footage that was found on old VHS tapes. It was done mainly to prove to Morgan Creek that there was a market for a Nightbreed director's cut if they put in on Blu-ray. Morgan Creek initially said the theatrical movie wasn't even worth the money it would take to put it on Blu-ray and they didn't want to license it out either, so it's taken several years to get to this point.

You are absolutely correct!

But, I also have to agree (weather you like it or not) that it is an insane price tag of $80. Yes i understand that they restored it and i understand it has many features and yes i understand that it has 2 or 3 versions of the film, But at the end of the day you are still paying $80 for just 1 movie (The same Film). This isnt a trilogy box set or a steelbook or a digibook or anything, (it is one single film). This also isnt the only film ever to get a full remaster restoration, there are many others and many others that i am sure are going to be released in the future. Personally i can not justify paying $80 for just 2 versions of the same film and extras and a cool slipcover/artwork...

To each there own choices and thoughts. If you are a huge fan and want to spend $80 on a single film go for it and if you don't then you don't.

The biggest question mark about this whole thing is how good will the uncut footage look. Yes they have access to film sources, but were they kept in good shape, or will this stuff look kind of like what the re-inserted footage did on My Bloody Valentine (1981)? That's still better than stuff sourced from VHS, but maybe people shouldn't get their hopes up too high for the quality.

Amazing news. I've wanted to see this for years but decided I would wait until the lost uncut footage was found, as I didn't want to see a cut version. Didn't even know if they'd find it or not of course. Pre-ordered the LE.

Agreed. Their Facebook is here if you want to let them know. I know they've heard the complaints countless times, but something's gotta give. If they can't do a proper encode they should give it to someone who can.

This was all clearly explained by Jeff at Scream Factory, it might be one film but there were tons of expenses involved in putting this movie together, for all the fans who wanted it so badly. This might not be the first film to get a full remaster but as Jeff did say a lot of money went into this.
First we get whines about it not getting a blu ray release
Then Scream announces it, suddenly there are whines about the lack of updates
Then , when Scream gives a crystal clear update about the release, and they explained the costs, the reasoning for it, and now there is even more whining about the price tag.
I swear there is more "whine" in this forum than a liquor store

Remember they created this package for YOU - the fans and collectors of this film, not for themselves. They put a lot of time effort, and a lot $$$ for this product. If you cant afford to buy the LE , don't, but you are depriving yourself of the best USA release the movie will have and if you change your mind later, it will cost more from scalpers.

On top of that there is the less expensive edition version of the Cabal Cut - which is also a great idea to have an alternate option , if you already own the Warner DVD of the *cut* version... The blu ray cabal cut is under 25.00 at Shouts Website.

On still on top of that Diabolik and Amazon might carry the LE for less than 80.00

There is no way, I would pay $80.00 for one blu-ray movie, regardless what it is. That's ridiculous! There's a sucker born every minute.

The director’s cut will positively delete some footage. The final scene in the theatrical film was mandated by a studio that was hoping to have the start of a slasher franchise. Clive stayed on in damage control mode during the reshoots, and I think some of the added slasher stuff will end up being in his cut because it works well and helps the story, like the scene with John Agar. Clive Barker cast him because he was in all those old monster movies and I’m sure the scene will be kept in even though it was part of the reshoots.

As for the price, I was expecting to just get a movie with cleaned up VHS footage. They found the original negative! I ordered two of the LE and one of the regular version just for the Les Edwards cover art. I've been waiting for this for two decades, so it's time to pay up. Thanks you, Scream Factory.

I used to collect laserdiscs (and still have some); and I also think this pricing plan sucks.

But after hemming and hawing for several hours, I pre-ordered.

Speaking for myself, I would have much preferred an edition that had the director's cut and the bonus disc, but not the theatrical cut, and saved that massive licensing fee. But oh well.

If it makes you feel better, that scene he was talking about comes early in the film and doesn't have much to do with the plot.

My word, they're not philanthropists over at Scream Factory. They created this package because there's a niche market for it and they're a for-profit company. Don't dole out the Nobel just yet.

Many of us understand the reasons for the inflated price tag on the limited set, but that doesn't make the pill easier to swallow. What I want to know is how long until Warner Archive starts selling Blus of the theatrical cut for $20? Once these 5,000 units sell out? Then those who jumped on this will have paid $80 for a disc of bonus features.

Preordered. I just hope it holds up as well as I remember it. I am a huge Clive Barker fan and saw this opening weekend in theaters and loved it. But it has been A LONG time since I've seen it so I hope it holds up to my memories of it. Finding so many movies don't stand the test of time very well as I get older.

As for the $80, I will gladly pay a premium price to a studio that is going out of their way to deliver movies that people want with great supplements. If Warner had handled this title you'd have gotten the theatrical cut with maybe a trailer for a supplement (at best). Instead you have Shout that have worked directly with Barker and created a final director's cut, lots of supplements and also include the theatrical (which I wasn't expecting). This kind of title would NEVER get this type of treatment from a mainline studio.

And the Cabal Cut I understand the cost issues on it..but its been explained why. 5000 units will not sell out that quickly IMHO, are there 5000 fans of this film ? How many of them arent websurfers and forum geeks like us

As for Noble, in the end there are a business and like all business they need to make money to survive like all of us. Im just saying that Jeff did post comments about costs already - it is what it is.

Or there are people who do not consider $80 a significant amount of money and lose zero sleep over buying it. Shout probably assumes there are at least 1,000 people who have $80 to throw at it (what gets sold by other retailers, like Amazon, will more than likely be discounted, but I know that everyone is a "sucker" if they even spend $60).

I'll wait to get the LE when it becomes available online through retailers. A poster and a low number isn't worth $20 to me.
