Amazon's standard discount when their Shout! Factory preorders go live is typically 30%, which means this set should be roughly $56.00 when the links go up. Big difference between that and MSRP.

I don't anticipate a limited edition / special edition scenario for that release. There is no dual rights situation that I'm aware of to muck things up and the differences between the unrated cut of Lord of Illusions and the R-rated theatrical cut aren't as extensive as what we're seeing with Nightbreed, either. I suspect they'll either include both cuts on the same disc via seamless branching, or skip the theatrical cut altogether.

So the only advantage to ordering from Shout is early release, a poster, and a numbered copy?

Where is this information coming from?

Yep. Well as long as the first 1,000 copies last.

Warner shouldn't have been dicks and allowed more copies to be pressed of the set with the theatrical cut.

I do think $60 would be more reasonable but what do I know.

As for the extras, of course, they've got to be on the LE or nobody will buy the LE, and the LE is what Shout! is counting on to make this release financially viable. People are correct that putting them on the LE is kind of bilking the customer, but they're wrong to think Shout! isn't aware of that, as that's kind of the draw.

I doubt that many people would shell out JUST for the TC on Blu-Ray.

I bet this SF/WB deal includes a window of time where WB must wait to release the theatrical cut separately.

I have spent 15 years building a library on DVD and Blu-ray because it was a n affordable way to build a film collection.
But when it is $80 for a single film with the same amount of extras we got on great catalog releases 10 years ago then whats the point?
Its no longer fun
This couldn't be farther from what you are talking about. This is a VERY niche title that wouldn't even get a glance from a major studio. If WB released this we would be lucky to get a bare bones release that wasn't an upscale of the existing DVD master. SE releases from major studios are always from tried and true titles that they know will get a broad audience. The amount of work that SF did for this goes so far above and beyond what anyone would expect for this type of film it is ridiculous. But the fact is this is STILL a niche title and for them to even justify that type of work and hope to recoup the costs of it would require them to try and get a premium price from those that would ABSOLUTELY want what they did and support that type of project. The cost probably reflects the expected volume of sales more than anything. This model is seen CONSTANTLY in all forms of media with price tags that are always far and above what the casual consumer would want to pay for something, but these sets aren't geared toward them. SF didn't go to the effort they went to so that someone who might be slightly interested in this title could see it this way, they did this for the people who have been clamoring for this release for YEARS.

If you don't want to pay a premium, at least they give you a solid option. It kills me that so many people want stuff like this for obscure titles and here it is but then complain because they don't want to pay for it or expect it to cost the same amount of money as a title that has a SE that is expected to probably sell well over 100x's as many copies if not more. It isn't like they slapped together a release by licensing a movie and just taking the existing master and some youtube special feature clips and calling it good.

...Or a big fan of the film that is ecstatic to finally have this fully restored on blu-ray AND realizes that $80 is pretty much chump change for a release they've waited YEARS for.

Has it really been THAT long since they found VHS copies of the missing footage? Holy cow I'm old. I had no idea I was waiting over a decade for this.

Unrelated Double-Feature plans: I'm definitely setting up a DF with Dust Devil and Nightbreed.

Exactly. Funny thing is, I wouldn't have thought twice to click purchase on the LE even if it was only the Cabal cut with the VHS footage. The fact that they've managed to actually hunt down the negatives and do a full restore WITH the director attached makes this an absolute no brainer in my book.

As you can see, I'm not delighted by the price either, but just bringing in perspective to create some levity, however momentary, to the situation.

I agree wholeheartedly. I was an early member of Occupy Midian and we had to beg, plead and then show up in droves for the Cabal cut screenings just to prove to Morgan Creek that it would be worth their while to license the movie out. They had zero interest in putting out a Blu-ray and the head of the studio said, "We don't license out our movies." when this project was initially brought to them. There wouldn't even be a DVD upscale transfer if it wasn't for Scream Factory, let alone a new HD transfer. For years no one would even bother looking in their film vaults for the lost footage.

Early overnight by what I see. I ordered mine late afternoon and my confirmation email is timed at 5:02 pm EST, order 82873. If I can count, that's only 127 more to make the first 1000, doubt they made it to midnight Eastern, much less Pacific. I've still got a one in a thousand chance of getting #666!

Hope there are going to be some left over for Amazon, etc where the shipping to Canada will be cheaper.
