I think it's amazing that there has not been one piece of news for this movie that doesn't make it out to be the most hilarious trainwreck ever.

No, crazy is taking some random fan's hasty translation (a translation using Google, no less) of a magazine interview as frigging gospel. Guy makes a desperate grab for attention and the Internet crowd checks its brain and plays along with him, which is just stupid.

I hate to use a cliche to rebut a cliche, but that's the exact same argument I read back in 1988 when Warner Bros. announced its plans for Batman.

The deal is....
...regardless of how far off this thing may/may not stray from the source material... ...regardless of how bastardized the mythos becomes... ...regardless of how crummy of a film it could become... ...regardless of how many negative critic reviews it could recieve... ...Fox is going to dump a shite-load into the marketing. And what will end up happening is all the tweens, buzzheads, and dweebos will come out in full force and this thing will make it's money back and then some... ...just because it's "Fantastic Four." ![]() |

If Tim Burton would have made THAT Batman movie today, it would most certainly fail. I argue that the fanbase and moviegoers of the time were hungry for comic book movies back then, so we pretty much accepted the deviations and flaws that came along with them -- But today, we ALL (fans, moviegoers, and the studios who produce the films) should know better! The comic book/superhero film genre is saturated, so the audiences, primarily the comic book fanbase, is a lot more critical, and justifiably so, than they were back in 1988.

Honestly, based strictly on early information, how many comic book movies have looked like a potential bull's-eye? Hell, I still have a hard time believing the guy who showed such a sure hand on The Avengers is also responsible for the visually clunky and choppily structured Serenity, so I'm not about to jump to conclusions. |

Nope. I've seen many movies throughout my lifetime, and there will always be many more to see or even watch over again. From the classic golden age to the modern age, I love movies! Who knows, I may very well be surprised with this Fantastic Four film (though, I highly doubt it), but regardless of how good or bad it turns out, I don't expect it to ever be something that will change my life in any inspiring way like some movies have. I've lived this long without seeing It's A Wonderful Life, and maybe someday I will watch it (although, it's a game I like to play with myself -- avoiding it for many reasons), but if I can live with myself as a movie fan having not seen such a highly regarded classic like that, I'm sure I could get by being ignorant of a half-baked comic book movie done without any true respect for the source material or the fans. There's not enough time in the day to be sad about missing something like that when there's always something more to see or experience.

But there are reasonable people who can cast their doubts while still taking the "wait and see" approach. I haven't made up my mind against this movie, but I've formed an opinion on it based on the things the filmmakers have said. Using the Batman example -- if, over the course of months, before any trailers or anything else was released, imagine if the filmmakers had come out and made statements like: "Bruce Wayne's parents will be murdered when he's an adult," "Batman only comes out in the daytime because we wanted a lighter movie," "We thought the audience couldn't sympathize with a billionaire, so Bruce Wayne will be a factory worker living in a small apartment in the slums," "The concept of a Batcave and Batgadgets are silly, so Batman will operate out of an abandoned garage and he'll use items like pipes and baseball bats in his war against crime." It's great to be open-minded and say, "You know, I'm going to wait and see what they do before I trash the movie." That's fine by me. However, it's also fine for someone who is a fan of the material to say, "Wait, that's not right. That's not Batman. Sounds like it's going to be bad." That's my approach, anyway. Going off of what I've heard from the director, the writer, and the cast themselves... I'm against this movie at this point in time. Because they've said things that have turned me off. If it comes out and it looks good, I will own up to that and see the movie. But I have no confidence based only on the things that I've heard so far from the people actually making the movie. ![]() |

I find it entirely suspicious that Kate Mara is now backtracking. I'd bet anything that after the Bryan Singer scandal currently rocking Fox Studios, and the complete disaster that Josh Trank created with Kata Mara's comments, it created more problems than he was expecting and that Fox Studios is afraid of what could happen.
Those movie fans who enjoy these superhero films, are also those fans who are also fans of the comic books. Fox Studios is already reeling from the mess created by Bryan Singer and the fact that Kate Mara is now backtracking on comments she made, it's too much of a coincidence that she's now backtracking on her comments. I wouldn't believe Kate Mara's new comments because Josh Trank, Fox Studios and the cast are trying to save this mess of a film before this starts spreading like wildfire. The fact that her original comments, as well as Josh Trank stating that the film wouldn't be based on the comic books, are the comments everyone should be focused on and worried about. Whatever new comments that Josh Trank, Fox Studios and the cast say trying to backtrack are just their attempt at damage control. |
