Yep it's always been able to upscale - it was just a matter of when. The myth was FUD spread by MS - just another case demonstrating who to trust and who not to trust.

Think it is also an indication of their confidence in blu-ray being in the pole position and not ever giving it up.

I think the next "major ticket item" is DTSHD-MA output.

I'd still like to be able to play video files in groups continuously, instead of having to go to it after one is finished viewing...

also some custom backgrounds and some playback functions with music ala shuffle etc...or even a custom screensaver..

Changeable user icon
Custom wallpaper (though I'd probably keep the current one, because its an animation) [maybe we could pick a 10 second part of a video that could loop, for the background!?]
Ability to zoom in on images (currently, you can only let them fill the screen, you can't zoom in any more than that, even if you have a 6000x6000px image)
AVI video support
Motion Jpeg video support (the type of videos most digital cameras create)
Bluetooth support for PCs (so I can transfer files back and forth from PC to PS3)

PS3 Fanboy is showing a screenshot that shows "BD 1080P 24Hz" as an option. Is that what you're referring to?

Will this upgrade allow for deinterlacing of 1080i BDs to 1080p? My TV behaves very differently with 1080i and 1080p material, which was one of the reasons I returned the PS3.

sorry, nothing is known at the moment about deinterlacing. does your TV support 1080p? if so it shouldn't be a problem, unless you're trying to play a game that is 1080i and wanting it to deinterlace to 1080p... i don't know how that works. You should post it on the official Playstation forums to have your voice heard.

The PS3 has no film-based de-interlacing support. It is essentially locked in video mode the entire time, so as the cadence changes, resolution is compromised. This is pretty much unforgivable at this stage in the game and embarrassing compared to every other DVD player I’ve tested from Sony.
Which I totally agree with. If you use the progressive outputs you're only getting half the resolution DVD can provide - it's actually more beneficial to just use it in interlaced mode and have the TV try to make heads or tails from the source material.

Hit triangle button while playing music and you'll get a menu - one of those options is shuffle play. While not exactly a custom screensaver there's also a visualization mode while playing music you can turn on.
