Do you have an explanation as to why these doctors were shirtless?

It just caught me as being odd...

I believe this "hospital" was in the pacific during WWII.

Wow, some very stirring images, good stuff. I spent much of my youth in (West) Germany, saw a lot of war torn city & town rubble and toured some extermination/death camps (like Auschwitz) and concentration camps (like Dachau). A very disturbing subject but necessary learning.

I'm gonna guess that conditions were ridiculously hot and humid combined with the condition of the supply of proper sterile garments had long since been depleted. While it was not ideal to do surgery in the bare, it was still incrementally better than reusing well-soiled/stained garments, further sweating in that, and creating an even more ideal bacterial environment.

Nice. I've never seen that picture before.
He put out a autobiography here recently. I want to pick it up. Seems like it may be a good read.
