Default Mac shipping with Blu?

I heard a rumor today that starting sometime in August Apple will start shipping Macs (at least the Imac and the MacPro) with blu-ray burners. This seems like it might have been a stretch but blu drives may not be. Has anybody heard anything to confirm or negate these rumors?

BD burners have been available on MacPro's for over a month - I know nothing of the Imac.

Incorrect. Mac doesn't have any BD drives of any sort in any of their computers. There is only speculation as to if or when they will have BD drives. If you ever want to find info about Mac stuff go to macrumors.com.

This year's official Steve's Surprise has come and gone as of this week, and the only changes were to the iPhone, .Mac, and 10.6--
See you in January...

Stevie doesn't want to sabotage iTunes, so he won't allow it until the noise demanding it is too overwhelming to ignore

I stand corrected - I remember reading an article...this one in fact http://www.engadgethd.com/2007/01/25...-power-mac-g5/ I thought it was production ready but I guess not

FastMac and MCE both released Mac-compatible BD burners for a number of Mac models, but Apple doesn't offer them directly. Also, there's no working playback solution for OS X, so to play a movie you'd have to use boot camp and boot into Windows.

I have been trying to find out if Snow Leopard will fix that, but no word on yes or no yet. I guess we will find out when Snow Leopard and new hardware gets released. I think most Mac users just want to BURN blu ray discs, not watch them on their computers.

I know some Mac users who would like to see Blu-ray movies playing in all their glory across a 24" or 30" Apple display from within OSX.

IMHO, Steve Jobs is making a stupid mistake against his core product of Apple towers by not having Blu-ray burners as standard equipment in the Mac Pro line. Lots of PC vendors are selling Blu-ray burners very well. They're actually getting into "affordable" price ranges. Jobs is definitely putting iTunes business ahead of Mac business.

What's really strange is Apple Computer was among the first group of companies to join the Blu-ray Disc Association. I wonder if the BDA can kick Apple out of it? The interests of Steve Jobs seem to be running counter to that of the BDA.

Steve is not going to put the hardware in until it can be fully integrated with Final Cut Studio and iDVD. The best thing about Macs is that when you buy it, everything works well. You will be aware that iCAL, Address Book, iPhoto, Aperture, iTunes integrate in to other programs. So they are not going to ship Mac Pros, iMacs with hardware that is not integrated with the whole system. The good thing though, if you have to have Blu Ray authoring on a Mac right now. It is possible, but when it does come out the factory, it's going to be awesome.

Probably right.
But, there are some that REALLY do want BD playback on their Macs.
I know of at least 3 people with MBPs that want that ability - without having to boot to Windows.

Wicky is right.
Stevie wants to milk iTunes a bit more.

Agreed, I think it's something that will be brought on by HD hard drive camcorders. With iMovie HD for editing, the software is there but Mac still needs the Blu-Ray hardware.
Anyone else remember one of Sony's first Blu-Ray demo discs at the retail stores...the one that said which manufacturers were behind Blu-Ray? I recall seeing the Apple logo, yet here we are still waiting over a year later....

Considering Mac is the Anti-Microsoft, I'd assume they'd start production a lot sooner than Microsoft as Microsoft supported HD-DVD as well as still being a sore loser.

Damn, I just bought an imac about a month or so ago. Well, I'm probably gonna buy a macbook pro before I go back to school, which wouldn't be for a while, so hopefully a blu-ray drive appears in the near future. But one thing I don't understand is with that external drive they came out with for the macbook air why did they just make it a DVD burner and charge $200 for it, when you can get a blu-ray reader (internal though) for just over $300.

I'd love to see an iMac 30in with Blu-ray BDR drive in it. August would be awesome...kick my 20in out to ebay and go with the newbie if this would be the case in August.

I too want BD on my MacBook Pro. But, just how much of a difference would we see on a 15" screen?

I hope you are right. I will buy myself one (external if I have to) and use that to burn my BD discs. I will be glad to see this enter Apple computers.
But we'll see. Nothing is official until he says "One more thing".
