Default Audio Only Blu-ray is HERE (almost)

The thread about the new Panny 2.0 standalone drifted off and talked a bit about this subject, so I thought I'd post this tidbit I got via email from Markertek:

To celebrate their 20th anniversary, Norwegian orchestra, TrondheimSolistene has announced that its latest album DIVERTIMENTI will be released on Blu-ray disc. The album was produced by Lindberg Lyd and will be released by the Grammy-nominated record company 2L, which is known internationally for its audiophile quality releases. Recorded in the Selbu church in Norway, the HD recording features the following specifications:
2.0 LPCM 24Bit/192 kHz
5.1 LPCM 24Bit/192 kHz
5.1 DTS HD Master Audio 24 Bit/192 kHz
5.1 Dolby True HD 42 Bit/192 kHz
5.1 Dolby Digital 48kHz
The orchestra is also releasing a hybrid SACD packaged with the Blu-ray disc which features 5.1 Surround + Stereo produced in Digital eXtreme Definition. TrondheimSolistene's previous release MOZART, was declared a record to die for by Stereophile Magazine. The new album, the world's first audio-only Blu-ray disc is available now for pre-order from 2L.

Thats very interesting! But, I wonder when there will be a car blu-ray/cd player so people can listen to blu-ray cds in their vehicle. Any rumors/news on this?

Panasonic showed off an in-dash Blu-ray player some time ago, but it was primarily designed to be used with in-vehicle LCD screens, and I haven't heard anything recently about a release date.

Given that this title is being packaged with an SACD, I would assume that the SACD would be a hybrid disc with a CD layer that could playback in automobiles. Honestly, the freeway at 80mph is not the ideal audiophile setup anyway.

True, but for the format to really sell as a music format, it would probably have to have at least this. I myself have a very good sounding 5.1 system (in my opinion) in the car.

I swear that a few months ago, I saw a survey which claimed that given a choice, people would preferred the experience of watching a movie with excellent sound with a so so picture over an excellent picture with so so sound. Sound is clearly very important to the Blu experience, but when it comes to music only, I believe the facts show people's clear choice is portability.

Anyone able to find this at a B&M in the States? Really hate importing. Will keep an eye on Ebay otherwise.

I'm sure some of the higher end online music retailers like Acoustic Sounds or Elusive Disc will carry this title.

The review of Divertimenti is up.

There a a few other Blu-ray Audio only discs in our database from Surround Records, and probably the Neil Young Archives..

i wouldnt mind having a high quality audio source available on the go, considering my cars sound system could keep up with most surround sound systems
