Late last night, I decided on the spur of the moment to watch my Olive Blu-ray of Ramrod (1947).
I bought this disc several months ago after I had already collected all of the Olive film noir titles and was looking for noir-edged films just outside the periphery of the genre, but it somehow got lost in the shuffle and stayed on my shelf while I was enjoying other movies. Two other noir-ish Westerns, Pursued and Blowing Wild, are also sitting on my shelf waiting to be watched. Veronica Lake shows an impressive acting range in this film as a woman who takes control of a ranch and uses her manipulative skills to fulfill some ambitious goals after her fiance is intimidated by a stern valley boss. Joel McCrea stars as the foreman ("ramrod") of Lake's ranch who becomes increasingly uneasy with the nature of his association. Watching Lake and McCrea in action in this film after seeing them in completely different roles in Sullivan's Travels is a reminder of how underrated both of them were in terms of their abilities in front of the camera. Ramrod was directed by Andre De Toth, who helmed a few film noirs, namely Pitfall and Crime Wave. The characters in this Western walk the same dark edge where the figures in those noir films dwell, and I thoroughly enjoyed watching the various twists and turns. I expected Ramrod to have a more explosive ending than it did, but I ultimately appreciate how things play out. Ramrod is a good little movie, and, aside from some minor print damage, it looks pretty decent on this Blu-ray. I was more annoyed by the lack of subtitles than I usually am with this particular film, though, because I found myself skipping back a few times to catch various lines of dialogue. |

Olive Films just announced Billy Wilder's Fedora coming to DVD & Blu-ray on 10/28/14. Moontrap (starring Bruce Campbell and Walter Koenig) coming to DVD & Blu-ray on 11/4/14. In regards to Moontrap it appears that Olive has taken note of the issues with the German version as the announcement states " Moontrap was remastered in HD by Olive Films in 2014 specifically for this release".

I just placed an order for High School Confidential and The Other Love from Deep Discount DVD, along with a few Kino Lorber titles that are cheap on that site.
The Other Love has received several unfavorable reviews indicating that it is an overwrought, outdated, schmaltzy, and excessively maudlin film by today's standards. Nonetheless, I decided to pull the trigger because I like the work of Barbara Stanwyck, David Niven, and director André De Toth. I saw a theatrical presentation of Double Indemnity last night, and that compelled me to check this movie out. I've read a handful of reviews for past Olive titles that dismiss the movies as being outdated or silly by today's standards, but I always enjoy the films when I take them at face value. I'm hoping that the same will be true for The Other Love. We'll see. If any of you have seen The Other Love, then feel free to weigh in with the pros and cons. High School Confidential is a no-brainer for me with respect to ordering the title, and I'm really looking forward to it. |

I watched it the other day and it was all right/ good, but for me not worth owning. The cast was a plus but the story/atmosphere/*feel* of the film did not work for me. It couldn't hold a candle to Double Indemnity. I bought it for the cast but it just wasnt enough at least for me. Im sure opinions will vary. I guess this was a thumbs in the middle for me

Double Indemnity is on my all-time top 10 movies list, so there are not a lot of films that do hold a candle to it. I've enjoyed all of the other Barbara Stanwyck movies that I've seen, though, namely The File on Thelma Jordan, Clash By Night, The Strange Love of Martha Ivers, and The Lady Eve. I need to hurry up and watch my copy of Blowing Wild, now that I think about it. I'll let y'all know my thoughts on The Other Love as soon as I see it. |
