I meant future value in the next 5 years or so, not when you're passing it on to the next of kin. I don't really care for buying a movie and seeing it sell for a fraction of the price a year later. But if several years pass at least before it becomes (nearly) worthless then at least I don't feel that "bought too early" remorse, if you know what I'm saying.

I bypass those thoughts by paying as little as humanly possible in the first place ! All those DVDs I paid $2.00 - $3.00 for, back in 2008, that I'm now upgrading on Blu ray, no matter what BuyBacks gives me, I'm golden. Legitimate, sealed TV box sets off eBay for a fraction of the price ! Now, with all those savings, the Boutique Buys ( TT, Criterion, Warner Archives ) don't seem to actually cost so much. |

Otherwise if it's totally about owning the movie to have it available "at your fingertips", and nothing about the fun of "collecting", then digital and streaming is the way to go. Far cheaper and more convenient. Somebody please tell me I'm not the only one who cares whether my movie purchase holds its value. As a collector for the FUN of it. Not as a business investment (because that would be...uh...like way stupid). Last edited by bruceames; 08-14-2014 at 12:52 AM. |

If you're a " collector for the fun of it," none of this matters, including the initial cost. If it's emotional value, that's not only subjective, but can't be judged " years from now " as you say. |

Does anyone know what Netflix's licensing model is? Do they negotiate a standard across-the-board fee with the studios for titles? Is it a case by case licensing? Do they pay a relatively small flat fee for a given movie, and then pay a "commission" every time someone streams that movie?

I don't collect for money reasons at all. Though some releases do appreciate in value it's pretty rare and random.
That said I do like that a lot of movies tend to hold some value, in case I ever need or want to sell them. If my tastes change or I replace a version with a newer release it's nice to be able to get a few bucks or more from an old disc. Not long ago I switched from collecting Region 1 Doctor Who DVDs to Region 2 Doctor Who DVDs and it's nice that I can sell the R1 versions on eBay for roughly what the R2 versions cost, making replacing very cheap. In contrast I was a PC gamer for a long time and switched to digital as soon as I could. Then I finally stopped playing games for the most part and that digital collection holds exactly zero value, there's nothing to sell. Thousands of dollars invested with nothing to show for it now that I'm done with gaming. Kind of sad. |

Same here. Really looking forward to it, even if it is admittedly a lesser film in Peckinpah's filmography. Really wish we could get Ride the High Country, Ballad of Cable Hogue, Junior Bonner, Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid, and Cross of Iron as well!

They don't shoot films in scene order you know, so it just had a poor ending.

It works for about half an hour but quickly falls apart after that. Peckinpah just isn't even remotely interested in the action scenes - the airport martial arts scene is played like a very shoddy Keystone Kops comedy and the ending is just incredibly lazy, like watching someone else playing a too-easy video game with comedy ninjas (and Peckpinpah wanted to make it even more surreal by having a dead character reappear at the end). It didn't help that this was the film where James Caan persuaded him that cocaine was non-addictive and added that to his list of addictions (not a good idea when Peckinpah already drank way too much and was on a wide variety of prescription meds). Sad to say, it's a paycheck job that most competent action directors could have done better but the disc is still worth picking up for Noon Wine.
