No, it's a character farting aloud and making a joke about what they ate against a black light joke with innuendo and subtext. One's childish, the other requires some form of thought.

Also, am I the only person tired of hearing the word overrated? Just because you may not like something as much as everyone else doesn't make what they're saying wrong. It just means you don't agree. But there's really no overrating things, because personal preference is just that, personal. People fully believe what they say about films, and how they rate them. No one can tell them otherwise. I didn't like TMNT, but I never said anyone was wrong for liking it, or that it was overrated. Far from it. I just think that term is thrown around too much for the sake of it, because someone doesn't agree with the majority.
Sometimes it feels good to stick it to the majority, even if it's just by calling something "overrated".

Most of the time it means "I don't think this [thing] is as good as other people say it is".

Obviously I know what the word's actual definition is (), it's just that so many seem to have adopted an almost hipster-esque appropriation of the term as shorthand for a "stop liking what I don't like!" attitude and to avoid having to justify their opinion. They can just cry "overrated!" and jump back out of the thread.

I feel like some people can't really realize that sometimes they may like or dislike a movie which goes against the grain of majority opinion. And instead of accepting that they embrace an "us vs. them" (or even an "I vs. everyone else") perspective where there's no way they could be wrong.

EDIT: I should rephrase myself up there at the end where I say "where there's no way they could be wrong." What I should say instead is "where there's no way they have a differing opinion in the minority."

Why does everyone assume its a j*zz joke? They were talking about the ship being filthy, and blacklights reveal all kinds of unseen dirt and messes.

Maybe its those viewers who have dirty minds, not the filmmakers.

So you guys are too good for a bit of jazz music in the movies?!

I think it's a j*zz reference, but since it's a veiled reference I feel it's a bit more highbrow than say, an overt fart gag in TMNT (which I'll concede I haven't seen) or the "Sam's happy time" conversation in Transformers.

Yeah, but in this case, Peter clearly
[Show spoiler]had a girl on his ship at the beginning of the film, and he practically bragged about his sexual adventures in the prison
, leading people to believe that the term "filthy" used by Gamora is exactly what she means.

+1

The whole "stop liking what I don't like" thing drives me nuts.

I would really give this one three and half stars, but I voted four stars in this thread just to remove the stick out of my... Nevermind... Here's my write-up.

Guardians of the Galaxy was a little too much of a sensory overload for my tastes, and I feel an urge to go for a quiet trail run after seeing it. A sensory overload is just what the doctor ordered sometimes, though, and this movie is fun in the same oddly cathartic way that roller coasters and water parks are fun. I was initially hesitant to see this movie, because the commercial trailers full of walking trees, green people, raccoons with machine guns, and 1970s music had led me to believe that the people at Marvel Studios had tripped out on LSD one too many times, but the enthusiastic recommendations of several friends and the glowing reviews from many trusted sources finally compelled me to check out the excitement for myself.

In a way, Guardians of the Galaxy turned out to be exactly what I expected from the trailers. If the rest of the Marvel superhero films are stately and prestigious fraternity houses on a college campus, then this movie is the Animal House, with toga parties, blow-up dolls, and random objects flying out of the upstairs windows. I was taken by surprise, however, by the likability of Peter Quill and the motley crew of alien characters who reluctantly take his side against forces of evil. Each of the Guardian characters is given a few moments of emotionally resonant screen time to shed some light on background details, and, in the end, I wanted to give everyone a high-five. My favorite aspect of Guardians of the Galaxy, though, is that it emphasizes the importance that music can have on a person's life, by way of Quill's "Awesome Mix" cassette tape that he has treasured for the 26 years since he was abducted by aliens during his childhood. This premise makes me want to compile my own "Awesome Mix" soon.

Once again, Marvel Studios spares no expense with regard to the special effects, and I am glad that the age of decent computer-generated images has finally arrived. The digital effects, as always, come with a price, because the result is somewhat cartoonish, and, at no point during this movie did I feel that any of the characters were in real danger. Guardians of the Galaxy uses this carefree vibe to its advantage, though, and I had fun rolling along through all of the explosions.

I was probably one of the last people in the world to see this movie, but I'll give it a thumbs-up just the same for those of you who may not have seen it yet.

I can't say I agree, to be honest. "Overrated" does have a specific meaning: basically, "the majority opinion seems to rate this high, and I don't think it should be". I wouldn't say that it would apply to TMNT, because there really aren't that many people who think that highly of it. I mean, hell, it's got a 20% Tomatometer reading, as opposed to GOTG having 92%.

That said, it does get used by a lot of people to mean "I don't like it as much as other people". But that's not so much a problem with the word, as it is with the people who mis-use it. Like the people who mis-use the word "mediocre" to mean "bad", when it actually means "average".

I am, however, tempted to say that the term "overrated" is overrated. Just like when people used to say that the phrase "jumping the shark" has jumped the shark.

My wife and I cackled hysterically at that spot-on description. It's a good thing I wasn't drinking my Sprite Zero at the moment I read this, or you'd be paying for a new laptop.

Speaking of words that seemingly have no meaning anymore: hipster.

Calling something 'overrated' is the ultimate in lazy criticism. To me, it simply means that you can't be bothered to articulate why you don't like something, and you're mainly frustrated that more people don't agree with you.

Except that "overrated" doesn't mean you don't like something. It only means that you don't like it as much as most other people seem to. It's more of a "Sure, it's good, but it isn't that good" kind of thing.
