If I set my PS3 up in a certain way the game will output a supported resolution of 1080p. Or, I could leave the PS3 settings at the auto-detected values and the game will output at 720p.

So the question is, which way is better? I would expect that the tv is automatically taking the 720p input signal and displaying it at its native resolution, so it scales the image, whereas the other option has the PS3 upscaling the graphics to 1080p and then outputting to the TV. I would think that the latter would require more work from the PS3 (to what extent, I'm not sure), but that both would produce a comparable image.

Thoughts?
It depends on your TV. If you have a TV that has a good scaler built-in, it doesn't matter which one you choose. If your TV doesn't have a good scaler, let the PS3 do work (it will be better).

Of course my setup costed 1000$ but i got 4gig of ram, 750gig HDD, Dual Core and 2x9600GT totally 1gig of Video Ram.

Still play with console tought, some game aren't avalaible to PC, but if they get release in both world i usually take the PC version

Not to count at quite a few game doesn't even render at 720p and use lower rez..
True. Did you know that Heavenly Sword has 8xAF and 4xAA?

A LOT more.

Here is a list of games and their NATIVE resolutions (PS3 and X360). Other games' native resolutions are in one of the links in my OP.

SEE HERE:False in Advertising.

Check out that article on how Microsoft advertises their resolutions to the consumer.

If im not mistaken didnt the PS3 also say that GTA4 was going to be 1080p, i seem to remember alot of you all saying you could only get it 720p. Is that MS fault?

Your article is not entirely accurate. Both PS3 and X360 games list their video outputs on the boxes. They (PS3 and X360 games) list ALL possible resolutions that can be output to the TV. It's just that each console goes about it in a different way. However, it wasn't always that way.

In the beginning, the PS3 only listed the native resolution on the box. I believe MS forced Sony to change that practice, when they started listing 1080p as a SUPPORTED resolution on all their games. Read the OP.

Your TV is most likely 1366x768 (768p resolution). That's why 1:1 pixel mapping doesn't fill your entire screen.
The TV industry still calls that resolution 720p, but resolutions are usually calculated via horizontal lines.

Ex. 480p = 480 horizontal lines
720p = 720 horizontal lines
1080 = 1080 horizontal lines

That's why I call it 768p. I forget why LCD, Plasma, etc have 768 lines of horizontal resolution. I think it has something to do with their pixel structures.

A pixel counting solution is the best way to determine a native resolution.
So your saying that My LCD is not a true 720p or 1080p tv? can you explain further.

GT5:P is not true 1080p. I believe this is the same process that Ninja Gaiden Sigma used to be "1080p" which is another PS3 game people think is 1080p but is not.

yes, it was confirmed that it is 1280x1080 a while back.

this is a good example of a game that has 1080 line progressing vertically (1080p) however is not full 1080p as it does not have the horizontal support.

i can't link another article, that was the only one i could access from work, look it up.

Default do all ps3 games get upconverted to 1080p?

if a game is native 720p will it get upconverted to 1080p? or does it depend on the game?

My PS3 upconverts DVDs to 1080p properly and BDs play fine (@1080p) but when I put in the "welcome" disc (BD format) with game and movie trailers that came with the PS3 it only outputs at 720p for some reason ... is that normal?

most PS3 games can only go up to 720p if you look at the back of the box of the game it will tell you how high the resolution will go up to

thats half accurate. however some do not say and allow upscaling. for example, on the back of Uncharted it only says 720p, but you can upscale to 1080p.

how come MLB 08: The Show doesn't take up the entire screen if its being upsacled?

as well as the games that say 720p on the back, when I check the info on my TV, my TV is saying its receiving a 720p signal, so if it is being upscaled by the PS3, why doesn't my TV say 1080p like it does when i upscale DVDs?

ive always been puzzled by this.

Upscaling is primarily for 1080i-only HDTV users, if you have 720p ticked as a supported res the game will default to that.

MLB 08: The Show (the demo at least) has an option to adjust the picture overscan.

PS3, look carefully, it does not take up the entire screen. probably 10-20 pixels left on all sides.

yeah.

ive got an lcd and maybe i don't understand overscan well, but if the ps3 is taking the MLB 08: The Show data and upconverting it to 1080p, why should i need to adjust the settings, shouldn't it automatically fill up my screen?
