Default Blockbuster going Blu-ray only?

I was at Blockbuster today renting a blu-ray movie and of course she asked if I had a blu-ray player at home and I just gave her a weird look . But then we started talking about blu-ray and how great it was and that I had gone to nothing but blu for all of my movies and then I mentioned that I had stopped buying and renting dvds, that is when she smiled and said that Feburary of next year Blockbuster will only carry Blu-Ray movies to rent and will be dropping dvd. I told her that would be pointless because there is not enough blu-rays out to make up an entire store, like the one that is close to where I live, it is too big of a rental store to have nothing but shelves of blu. As much as I want to beleive this news is true, I just don't see it happening this quickly. Everytime I tried arguing with her, she would only keep re-assuring me that the newsletter she just got said this was true. I should have asked to see it, o well. Anyone else hear this crazy rumour?

If I thought this could be remotely possible I'd be shorting their stock.

Thats ridiculous! But there are enough blu's to fill a Blockbuster store now. It won't happen because not everyone owns a high def tv yet, nor a blu-ray player, they're not at an affordable price for most consumers, and its only the beginning for blu-ray.

I don't believe it. Although, I can picture all Blockbusters having half or more of the store filled with Blu-rays by 2010. That's if Netflix doesn't put them out of business by then.

I guess if Blockbuster wants to go bankrupt they will do such a move. Yikes.

Don't see this happening as there are too many catalog titles out there.

Even if this is true, it would be a stupid move by Blockbuster. Blu-ray might make more money, but BB will lose a lot of profit because even by next year the majority of people will still be on DVDs. Even right now, most BBs don't even have half a wall of Blu-rays.

It's pretty ridiculous to even consider the possibility Blockbuster would be dropping DVD anytime soon. The video stores in my city kept carrying VHS tapes until at least the 2003-2004 time frame after the 1997 launch of DVD. Some still have catalog VHS tapes to this day.

This just does more to back up the theory I have about a lot of counter personnel: they make up a lot of stories on the fly.

Take for instance the recent release of the 80GB Metal Gear Solid 4 Playstation 3 bundle. I called around to a lot of stores helping a friend of mine looking for one of these things. On several occasions I had nitwits telling me "they don't make the 80GB version anymore; they discontinued it." I informed them they didn't know what they were talking about and should be more up to speed on Blu-ray and PS3 news. This Blockbuster thing could very well fall into the same category.

IF (and its a big if) that was true, I am sure RedBox and Netflix would be very happy. I am sure that BB would still offer DVD's online as I am sure they have way to many DVD's in total to go 100% Blu. I highly doubt this would happen although this would be a great push for the Blu format, it would be a stupid move business wise.

I am just happy they are carrying them. But seriously, Blu-ray is going to remain a nich of what DVD is until they drop the prices on the players to $99. Even if that happens, a lot of people have no intention of upgrading their DVD player before they get a Hi-def TV. That is priority one. Besides, BB is going to be a relic in history once every thing goes "air".

MAYBE.........they were confused as to what year it was (2007??) and thought you were talking about HD-DVD and they pointed it out as being dropped from the store in Febuary....

Apparently someone got the memo too late and not catch the date.

No, I could believe that they'd stop buying NEW DVD releases and only buy Blu-ray releases from that point on, but they'd keep the DVD as rentals until Blu-ray over takes DVD.

I don't think that is such a smart move for Blockbuster to make because they will lose a lot of profit. They're already having a hard time competing with Netflix and such. What they might do is slowly increasing Blu's selection and slowly decreasing DVD's selection when new movies come out so people can realize the benefits of upgrading to Blu.
