And I agree, Kalifornication is definetly Brad Pitt's best but he was really great in 'The Assassination of Jesse James by The Coward Robert Ford' just got overshaddowed by the amazing performance that Casey Affleck put in.

If it would have been a no-name actor, he'd be permanently engraved in your memory "The Don"
I just can't see Daniel Day Lewis playing a boy who grew up overnight. I just don't think that he could pull of the amazed look like Tom Hanks did (I don't think that Tom Hanks could pull that role off today). Pitt was great in Jesse James, I think that he was great in a lot of movies, he was also in some terrible movies.

It is not a knee jerk reaction. The actors who played the characters made those characters who they were. There is a reason why De Niro had to play Don Corleone like Brando. In order for Tyler Durden to be played like he was in Fight Club, it had to be Pitt. Dustin Hoffman could not have done Han Solo. Arnold Swartze... could not have been Indiana Jones. Sylvester Stallone could not have played Travis Bickle. There are roles that are not defining, which other actors could pull off. Tyler Durden and Don Corleone are not those roles.

This thread definately reinforces that there are different strokes for different folks.

wow, I could have found a less cliche way of saying that.

My favorite and I feel the greatest actor ever is Al Pacino. No one can yell and scream and still be that believable

His greates works are some of his most understated. Serpico, Godfather I&II. Genius in each.

They also don't give Oscars to Martin Scorsese until he made Departed. Peter O'Toole only has an honorary. Oscars mean very little except marketing for a movie.

Daniel Day Lewis is very intense and would not handle Big or Forest Gump Not the greatest movies ever but they have the characters have a quality of simplicity that I don't think that Daniel Day Lewis could do. Tom Hanks has been in some amazing movies with pretty good performances on his part.

Why does everybody keep coming back to Nicholas Cage? Raising Arizona good, Leaving Las Vegas good...everything else is junk.
Jack Nicholson has fallen into the trap of great icons, they are just playing themselves. De Niro, Pacino, Nicholson, Hoffman, Voight, they are basically just playing their legendary selves now. It doesn't take away from what they have done, but other actors are starting to surface that will fill what they used to be.

I strongly disagree. I believe his performances in "City of Angels" and "Adaptation" were excellent.

Completely agree with Serpico. Such a great movie but one that many do not know him for

Ok adaption was pretty good. I forget how many movies he has been in, because I hear Con Air and have self induced amnesia. When somebody talks about Next I flash back to the 14th century. If anybody talks about Ghost Rider, I pass out from my brain turning off. Honeymoon in Vegas isn't terrible, but I still feel like I have the black plague whenever it is brought up. Nicholas Cage has done some very good films, just not the best ever. Plus didn't he marry Michael Jackson's ex...has there ever been a better example of settling?

I am not especially a fan but Tom Hanks really is possibly the best actor alive. Or maybe he has just had more roles to show it off.. either way.

daniel day all the way...

i'm rubbing my eyes and re-reading these posts on cage and buschemi as the greatest ever

obviously most of us are in the younger generation, saw newer flicks, and thus have discarded the classic actors, who FILL UP AFI's top 50 of all-time:

Agreed. The problem with AFI though, is they only talk about American actors..

People seem to be confused. This thread is greatest actor ever - not your favorite actor..

Julie Andrews?

Will Smith could be considered an actor and musician. Russell Crowe has a band.
