Default PS3 to Media Server Connection

I apologize for even posting this but I've searched all over the 'net and have tried everything I've read but I can't get either Windows Media Player 11 or Tveersity to recognize my PS3. Nor can I get the PS3 to find a media server.

I was hoping someone else experienced the problem and was able to get around it. If not, I'll just keep trying.

I have the same problem. It won't recognize my WinXP laptop so I can share photos, movies, etc.

I used to have this feature hooked up but between the PSN updates and my wife "redoing" the computer I have not setup the media server connection in awhile. It has to do with your networking security. I assume both of you are using a wireless connection? You need to go to your PC and do a search for your PS3 so you can allow it access. Once this is done the PS3 can access your PC and pull pics and music.

What kind of Router are you guys using? What have you tried to get it to recognize the PS3?

You have to have PS3 turned on and Media Sharing turn On in the system menu on the PS3. The for Windows Media Player you should pull up the Share Media option you should see an UnKnown Device (which should be the PS3) add it to have access.

This is correct. Also, be sure the Computer's Media Player is Sharing your files over the network also. Should come up on the ps3 automatically if everything is working good. I use Nero now, Windows Media Player was not recognizing all my files and Nero is really easy to set up, then again, so was WMP.

Just to add to what everyone else has already suggested, if you've gotten this far and still aren't having any luck make sure you reboot both your PC and PS3. Sometimes just doing a restart of the media server will do the trick.

Specifically, if you're using TVersity you'll want to add both TVersity and MediaServer.exe (in the TVersity folder) to your trusted applications if you're using the Windows Firewall.

Exactly what he said above, when you search for devices on your network the PS3 will come up as an Unknown Device. Give that device access to the network. On the PS3 XMB screen under music, picture, or video select media server and your PC should show up here.

Default Anyone tried NAS?

I am interested in buying the DNS-323 2-Bay Network Storage Enclosure or maybe the DNS-343 4-Bay Network Storage Enclosure (once I win the lottery).

Anyone that has either of these had any luck with them streaming media to the PS3?

I was just watching Prison Break using Media Server from my PC. It works fine for me although sometimes it gets stuck.

This should help you: -

I've got a Linksys router. It recognizes the PS3 by IP address and I've gone in and changed the settings to allow the PS3 (as well as my kids' computer in the basement) access to the network. I've made sure that WMP 11 has full access through the firewall but I can't get that "unknown device" icon. I've turned off the firewall and tried it as well but still no luck, so it can't be a firewall issue.

I installed tversity and tried that, but again the computer & PS3 couldn't find each other.

Oh, well.

Make sure the "Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service" and "MediaServer" are both check marked in the Firewall Exceptions. That's what it is on mine. If you can't find them I guess you'll have to manually add them.

Yes, the WMP network sharing is already allowed. When I click Add I can't find MediaServer anywhere so that I can add it. I don't know what directory to look in and when I search I get no results. Am I missing a component? This is a brand new computer so everything should be okay. I'm puzzled.

Let me check, if I find it again I will let you know.

EDIT: Nevermind, that came with TVersity. I'm using WMP11 so I don't need that anymore. But I do have wmplayer and wmpshare check marked.

What have you done so far in WMP by the way?

Are you using a mix of wired and wireless connections? I had a couple of routers that would not allow communication between my wired and wireless devices, and the only way I got around it was to get a new router.
