A movie based on comic book characters whose identities have not changed in the 50+ years that they've existed, yet when the movie comes out massive rewrites to the characters biographies (such as the bit quoted below) to accommodate the actor...yes, i honestly believe that this is being done only to show they are "progressive."

This is not an uncommon trend though...one need look no further than female Thor to see 'marketing ploy' written all over it.

It rarely works, however. Why? Because the experiences of a white teenager, and a black one are very different. Same with a black child raised in a white family, or even a white child raised in a black family.

Guarantee, it will be so lazily and sloppily done that Johnny will be your stereotypical black teen male and Sue will be your stereotypical white girl teen regardless of what kind of family they were raised in. And other than a couple throw away jokes, I doubt they will even address that the experiences between the two are and would be vastly different.

I think it would have been better to make them both black or make Mr Fantastic or Ben Grimm black rather than rewrite the family tree, but I do admit this is a cool twist on the adoption thing and not something we normally see.

It's still an unnecessary change to the characters, when there are so many more things to be concerned with when it comes to adapting them.

I know what you're saying, and that spin is sort of cool that it goes against cliché, but to twist your words a bit: They've clearly seen an opportunity to do something different with the concept of the characters from the very beginning, which is why they are so far removed from the way they should be depicted.

I don't even know what we're arguing about, so I'll just say this. To me, the concept is not different. The Storms are still a family, and I have no reason to believe that by the end, the F4 won't be, either.

Eventually white people won't be the majority and you will start to see more and more nonwhite actors and actresses playing fictional characters that started out as white.

Fortunately for many of you, you'll probably be dead by then so I guess you won't have to see it.

I know you can't say much about "The Fantastic Four," but surely you're aware of the attention being given to that movie. Does it bug you how much people pick apart the casting choices and other details?

Like you said, there are a million blogs and websites talking about the casting and they hear one little thing, like, oh, there was rumor it was a found-footage movie, so then there were a million comments on that. If we’re going to be up for everybody’s public disposal of it, I try not to get too caught up with anything on the Internet. Out of sight is out of mind for me a lot of the time. I already know that people hate me for the fact that I’m playing Reed Richards and that we’re ruining their franchise. It’s tough because when you’re taking on a franchise that’s already been established, you do kind of owe something to the characters and to the creator. At the same time, you want to bring it to a fresh audience. My dad grew up with the "Fantastic Four" comic book and not a lot of kids did, so you also want to make a movie that they can enjoy. I will say that this film that we made is not really for little kids, I don’t think. We do take a more mature approach.

I don't know, maybe it's me, but as much as I'd love to see the Fantastic Four and Spider-Man with Marvel Studios, I know I wouldn't have a problem with these other studios (Fox and Sony) doing the characters if they just knew how to handle them. I'm huge supporter of Fox's X-Men and I love them where they are, but I wasn't too fond of the first two FF films, and this reboot appears to be going even further into lousy territory. With Sony, the Spider-Man films have been enjoyable for the most part. I actually liked Webb's first Amazing Spider-Man film more than the earlier Raimi films, but now it just seems like Sony don't know what to do with the character, and that to me just seems odd. Shouldn't they have worked all this stuff out by now? An unwanted Sinister Six movie, but no clue about where to go with ASM3? Really!?

Everyone wants a big Avengers-level franchise, but not everyone knows how to map it out and make it. They sound like they're just riffing as they go along and at the last minute throwing crap against the wall to see what sticks.

This is the kind of thing that's going to eventually kill the superhero genre in Hollywood -- Not just saturation of superhero movies, but saturation of poorly conceived and executed superhero movies. I sense the same thing going on with all these television series -- at some point it's all going to bust, simply because the more they make, the more we will become critical of what we're given. That's when we'll start looking for something different outside the superhero genre to satisfy our need for diversity -- but not because we'll be tired of superheroes, but because we'll be tired of so many bad or mediocre superhero movies and TV shows.

Sorry for the rant, but my point is: If you support crap, you will continue to be fed crap. If you support great things, the studios will take notice and hold that up as a standard to make more great things. Choose with your wallet and continue to speak out on the things you love and things you hate. That's all.

I am a huge supporter of Fox's X-Men, but I think the only reason it is good is because of Bryan Singer. Without him, The X-Men movies would have been as craptacular as Daredevil and the Fantastic Four movies.

I give all the credit to Singer. Fox sucks at this.

Now a Bryan Singer Fantastic Four movie would be worth getting excited for!
