Default Wii is going to kill the video game industry...

I've said it before and I'll say it again - Wii sales are bad for high-tech gamers supporting PS3 and X-Box 360...Nintendo is the main producer of games for its products, leaving 3'rd party producers behind and those 3'rd party producers can't make enough money on low selling PS3 and Xbox 360s...

Article alludes to this...

The 360 has been out what? A year and a half or so? The PS3 six months? The Wii has been out about six months as well.

VERY early in this ballgame.

Your article makes some good points and raises some interesting concerns, but I think they're raising the panic flag a bit too early in this game, all told.

Here's why:

I'm already seeing "GameCube itis" show up for the Wii.

People will buy Nintendo systems for Nintendo games ultimately...not to play watered and dumbed down non high def ports of what should be next gen titles, just for the sake of using the Wii remote. This isn't going to be an easy cash cow for third parties. I don't think a Nintendo system has been a boon for third parties since the SNES!

Right now the Wii is still enjoying the honeymoon but I'm not yet seeing enough to suggest to me there's going to be more substantial software follow through than the tepid support the GameCube had before it. I need to see more follow through than Mario Party 8 and kiddie stuff like that.

In the end, gamers are going to go to where the big games are.

I could see a lot of people buying at least one other system and a Wii on the side for laughs, but I'm just not worried about it, in total.

I expect to see overall sales for the Wii and their games drop drastically by the time the PS3 and 360 have their 2nd price drop...

which will probably be 2008 christmas and the PS3 will have gained alot more ground by then as only so many more people are going to get the Wii and I already know a handful of people that are waiting for a price drop on the PS3...

3rd party titles for the Wii have to employ the first party quirks to be worthwhile. See Mortal Kombat [gesture based special moved].

3rd party titles do not employ the gimicks nearly as well, again see Mortal Kombat [ Kreate a Kombatant can't be stored on your wiimote, only way to take it to a friends house, involves overriding their MKA savefile ].

People get the Wii for first party games. Just like the Gamecube.

The console itself isn't that much of a step up over the GameCube either, just the Wiimote is freaking huge.

The war has barely begun.

PS3's edge is the blu ray player. That was the only reason why I bought the PS3.

I also have a Wii, it's game play is revolutionary. The Wii has really change the video game experience.

I would worry more about the XBox 360.

Go Blu Ray!

The wii is an awful piece of trash in my opinion...we have one at work and I can't stand it...Call of Duty 3 for wii is probably the worst gameplay I've ever experienced. It's a great kids toy though!

Then you haven't played 'Batman & Robin' on the original PS. I had the misfortunate of playing it.

Default Wii

Wii, just saying it makes me feel like a kid on a swing or something. I'll admit, I purchased one about four months ago. I only have 2 games for it, Zelda and Paper Mario. It's neat and all, but it just looks like a lot of the games out for it are crap. I play it some, but I'm much more interested in my PS3 and PS2. I don't feel like I've lost much money with it, it's just OK. This is the same sentiment I hear from my students (young teens) who thought it was all the rage when it came out and now they're either die-hard 360 fans or PS3 savers (they save up and finally buy it, then all their friends are at their house to play until they save up for one). Not to mention, they beg me to bring mine in and hook it up for them to play during lunch. The hold-outs want more games before they'll bite.

I think it was an absolutely wonderful idea to make a motion sensing wiimote and Wii did revolutionize the gaming industry by adding the idea of motion sensing to Sony and MS. But good ideas sometimes are not the most practical... I cannot tell you how sore my arm was after holding up the remote to shoot some guy off in a distance for Red Steel or other shooting games for that matter. Or sometimes if you move too fast and move out of range for the sensor bar (bluetooth would have been a better choice I think since it will have a much wider range w/o worrying about things blocking the line of sight) and it can get frustrating.

Overall, its a good system, great idea, and well marketed for launch. And it will continue to be fun for wiiplay or wiisports or even mario party 25, but it is not for serious gamers.

Too bad the Wii and the PS3 draw the level of comparisons that they do. The Wii, granted, hit a sweet spot in the market - very simple, low res games that any idiot can play, with the gimmick baton thing, all for a very low price. But it's just that. A gimmick, a quick buck, and you can bet that anybody who's become comfortable with the Wii weed now wants the PS3 crack!! The PS3 is clearly the Lexus of the Home Entertainment / Gaming pieces, and now that people are starting to build home theatres, they're starting to see the value and future proofing they get adding in a PS3:

1) Most kick ass gaming console -- seen a trailer for Lair or Warhawk? Played a demo of Ninja Gaiden? Come on... check out one of these puppies in a good home theatre, HDMI set up...

2) Blu-ray out of the box that works incredibly well (one of the fastest load times too)

3) With Firmware 1.8, now upscales DVDs

4) HDMI 1.3 -- Future proof for Dolby True HD and DTS Master Audio (booya!)

5) Music and Photos -- and Slide Shows incorporating both pictures while you listen to your music. Have a decent digital camera and an HDTV? Come on, tell me how good those pictures look!?! And now you can media stream from your PC -- DAMN!!...

Most companies would kill to have that kind of product advantage. It's SONY's marketing department that needs a shot in the arm for not properly showcasing what this little powerhouse is capable of. Nintendo was in every major shopping mall giving live demos. Gimme a good receiver; some good surround speakers, an HDTV, my PC, a Warhawk and Lair Demo, and a nice PS3 tradeshow booth, and I'll blow the sheeeeite out of the frickin' Wii and sell hundreds of PS3 a day to all age groups. My wife goes nuts over the photo slide shows with the music thing.

But I do know people will eventually get it -- Watch how many Wii owners upgrade and buy PS3s this Christmas -- and for that, Sony can thank Nintendo opening up the gaming audience a bit. In the meantime, here's hoping Sony tells the full story of the PS3 a little better, and that they do so in mass media spends, including TV.

i made a DVD with high res pics from Astronomy Photo Of The Day, STEREO shots of the sun, and a bunch of anaglyphs that i created with Callipygian 3D Photo. i bought 6 pairs of the red/blue 3D glasses and we gaze at the 61" HDTV for an hour. the astronomy photos are a big hit when we have couples game night, or when friends are over and we're partying. most of the APODs are huge in resolution and look spectacular on an HDTV. highly recommended.

The Wii is quite literally an overclocked GameCube with a new body on it and the $50 or so gimmick remote controller. That's it. That's all it is.

That's why Nintendo is making mad profits on it left and right. $200 for an overclocked GC is ridiculous (that's minus the cost of the remote), but when the other game systems are $400 on up? You're looking great. That's how you stay in the green from day one. Genius, really.

I think Nintendo will continue to enjoy a nice strong niche for itself. The real gold for them has been and will continue to be the portable gaming market, which they own hands down.

Overall, I never have and I probably never will view Nintendo as a negative when it comes to the gaming industry.

I was thinking the same thing! That would be sweet to show off the system.

I also own a Wii. I bought it to get me through this drought period between PS3 launch games and July when more games start to hit.

I do not think Wii will "destroy" the video game industry. I think Nintendo outsmarted almost everyone in introducing this system at this time. They knew they could not keep up with tech specs of PS3 or online play of 360, they went back to roots, and dove into simple gaming.

If anything the Wii have help the industry as a whole, as it is increasing the gaming market to people who would not otherwise buy or play a gaming machine. Then a percentage of those people who get into the "gimmick" and want more depth in play will look towards other platforms...

i have never even heard of Pando until now. just went to the website and i may need to download it. as far as the DVD image, most of the anaglyphs i made are from personal photos, so i won't be sharing any of that.
go to http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/archivepix.html for the APODs. there are thousands of them. 1 for each day dating back to 1995. start with the more recent photos, as those will have the highest res.

the STEREO photos are located here http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/st...o3D_press.html

and to make 3D anaglyphs, download Callipygian here http://www.callipygian.com/3D/
you can make great 3D images from digital camera pics, or make them from existing photos. make sure you have the 3D glasses before you start, though.

I got 1 for my wife and she hasn't touched it in months (she got 1/2 threw Zelda and quit) we spend most of our time fighting for the PS3 or she'll play her DS or PSP

I have a Wii and I have not played it too much lately. I started playing Zelda for a while, but once I got more into the PS3 with Resistance and upcoming Ninja Gaiden I have little reason to go back. I am going to try Paper Mario, Mario Party, and Mario Galaxy but I doubt these games will stack up well.

When a new release is available on all three systems it is always a toss up between the PS3 and the XBOX never the Wii. The only titles I will buy for the Wii are the exclusives which are few at the moment.

One positive for the Wii is the Virtual Console. These are great cheap games that give me a chance to break away from the in depth games of today's next-gen consoles. It's nice to be able to play a game from start to finish in an hour. The XBOX has some of these games, TMNT arcade, comes to mind, but the Wii has more of the classic games I want.
