I didn't know them at the time and it's been a couple of months already. I think I can find one of the names because I remember the pic with the article, but I think he was a fan favorite (good talent but maybe too young) actually and when asked about his upcoming part, he gave the "I haven't heard anything official but I'd be interested" response.

Probably none of them were more than potential auditions at that point but they all seem to be close enough in build to get there and had a good look to them. Of course, Michael Jai White was related in the comments.

Wow same guy. I remember now it was a tweet that led me to this video. I'm thinking one of those "top # actors to play the role" articles. He stood out, obviously... athletic and made a good name for himself as an actor.

Cumberbatch, Farrell, Reeves AND Phoenix are the Frontrunners for Doctor Strange

The Wrap reveals that four frontrunners have now emerged for the role of Doctor Strange in the Marvel Studios movie, and one of them is none other than the man who recently dropped out and resulted in all of the recent casting rumours. According to the site, he has apparently had second thoughts and he shouldn't be counted out just yet.

However, also in the mix is British actor Benedict Cumberbatch, a fan-favourite choice who was said to be in talks very early on in the casting process. A surprise addition to the lengthy shortlist is none other than Colin Farrell, an actor who was recently added to the second season of True Detective.

This is the first time we've heard him connected to Doctor Strange, while that fan support for Keanu Reeves has put him on Marvel's radar and the studio are said to be paying attention. Cumberabatch's busy schedule could stop him nabbing the coveted part, while Jared Leto, Justin Theroux and Oscar Isaac are still actively pursuing the role.

Well the first time any of us heard about Ezra Miller up for The Flash, he was already cast. So who knows what can happen.

Personal disinterest. He's a fine actor, and in all honesty would probably do an excellent job, but I'm very much over the need many have for him to be in everything. It just seems we can't go through one of these casting processes without his name popping up. There are many, many actors ahead of him on my list (Pedro Pascal sits comfortably at #1). So to really sum up my answer, I guess I don't want it to be him because I'm rather tired of him.

Star Trek Into Darkness is literally the only thing I've seen him in, other than the pilot of Sherlock, which I disliked. Actually I disliked both of those, but he was a standout in each.

Nothing against the guy, but I can't see Farrell as Strange, at all. I like Reeves, but I don't think he's the best choice for Strange.

I don't see what's so great about Cumberbatch, but I suppose he could do it.

Hardy is apparently up for the Apocalypse role in X-Men: Apocalypse, so we can rule him out.

I'm really on board with Phoenix in the role, but for some reason, I could see Marvel having a repeat of the "Edward Norton situation" with Phoenix down the line. He might want to do one movie, but would he be game for a Doctor Strange trilogy? An Avengers movie (or multiple Avengers movies)? Popping up elsewhere? I highly doubt it.

Ever since Jake Gyllenhaal was mentioned to be in the running, I've been a proponent of that idea. He's not "above" such movies (Prince of Persia...) and he's a great actor. He's shared the screen with Downey before (Zodiac - funnily enough, Ruffalo was in that movie, too), and I could see Gyllenhaal fitting in alongside Evans, Hemsworth, etc, as well as being capable of headlining his own franchise.
