I didn't pre-order it and even with the Barnes sale coming up I don't think I can hold out for too long. I may have to go to Barnes and get a copy. I just wish they had it on sale. Otherwise maybe a coupon will come out this week for maybe 20% off.

Have you browsed around the BN coupon threads on DVDTalk for potential coupons to use?

Oh, this is gonna be tough. And I haven't upgraded/bought all of these yet, so I'm just going on the quality of the film, not the release. In no order ...

Three Colors Trilogy
Blue is the Warmest Color
In the Mood For Love
The Double Life of Veronique
Frances Ha

Ask me tomorrow. I'll have a different list.

Great list! I'd include the first two, replace three with the Thin Red Line, keep four, and prob replace five with either Yi Yi or Everlasting Moments or the Double Life of Veronique. Super tough though, as Revanche and Thief are fantastic films.

Everlasting Moments is a film that doesn't get a lot of talk around here. I'm guessing you recommend it?

My list is close to this but:

Close-Up instead of Thief and Wings of Desire instead of Revanche... which I have not seen.
Worth a blind buy I'm guessing due to the number of trustworthy people recommending it.

I was very underwhelmed by that film. Still, I do think it should be talked about a bit more.

If I recall correctly, Everlasting Moments concerns a woman finding her independence during a time when the male was seen as the dominant-being and head of the family. From that respect, it is quite captivating. Furthermore, the mise-en-scène, the lighting, and the other components making up the film are well-established by Troell. Unfortunately, the film as a whole, specifically the story, did not leave too much of an impression on me.

I see a lot of praise about the film, though, so if you are feeling testy you should definitely check it out. It certainly won't hurt.

I was looking for Yi Yi at the library just now on my lunch! That's one I really want to see. I know they have it because I have found it in their catalog before, but for whatever reason, I can't always locate it.

As I mentioned in my PM to you, I picked up The Burmese Harp, (a jhiggy recommendation ) and Ali: Fear Eats the Soul

When do you think they'll announce The Brood? It's been available overseas, for about two years now. Although, if they DO release it, let's hope they go with original poster art. They ruined the Scanners packaging.

I was kinda hoping that either Scream Factory, Olive Films or Kino would've gotten this. Heck, MGM themselves!!!

I recommend it. It's excellent. Beautifully lensed with some achingly poignant moments.

Criterion's description sums it up well:

Quote:
Though poor and abused by her alcoholic husband, Maria Larsson (Maria Heiskanen, in a beautifully nuanced portrayal) finds an outlet in photography, which opens up her world for the first time. With a burnished bronze tint that evokes faded photographs, and a broad empathetic palette, Everlasting Moments—based on a true story—is a miraculous tribute to the power of image making.

Carlos
The Ice Storm
Chungking Express
Three Colors
Frances Ha

(and no, I can't really believe I put Frances Ha ahead of Double Life or Blow Out or Thief or Naked but there you go)

what's even weirder is that yours is (I think) the third mention for it, while Fanny & Alexander has been cited only once!

My list would look pretty similar. I'd cheat with the There Colors Trilogy to get more Kieslowski in, even though I think the Double Life of Veronique is a better film than any in there (maybe on par with Blue).

Three Colors Trilogy/Double Life of Veronique
Fish Tank
Maurice/Blue Is The Warmest Color/Weekend
Fanny and Alexander
The Thin Red Line (though I'd prefer Days of Heaven in here!)

Cheating 6th pick: Blade Runner. My favorite film of all time and it was in the Collection at one point.

Well, all this talk about post-1980 films has motivated me to fill a couple holes. Just ordered:

Blue Is The Warmest Color (love the film, sad about the lack of extras, but oh well)

In the Mood For Love (An absolute favorite of mine. Upgrading FINALLY.)

La Dolce Vita (Honestly, I thought I had already ordered this! OOPS! Also an upgrade.)
