Quote:
Nominated for 6 Academy Awards; director Mike Nichols' witty, romantic look at life in the corporate jungle stars Melanie Griffith as Tess McGill, an ambitious secretary with a unique approach for climbing the ladder to success. When her classy, but villainous boss (Sigourneey Weaver) Breaks a leg skiing, Tess simply takes over her office, her apartment, even her wardrobe. She then creates a deal with a handsome investment banker (Harrison Ford) that will either take her straight to the top - or finish her off for good.

such a great 80's film. I am always complaining that there are not enough Mike Nichols films out on BLU.

Amazon has it for $11.98 (pretty low considering this seemed like a Criterion title at one point)

Yes! One of the greatest 80s movies, with one of the most flawlessly written scripts EVER. A plot that's designed like a Swiss watch, complex and original characters, and UNFORGETTABLE dialogue.

How often do you get a comedy nominated for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, and Best Supporting Actress x2. Just a shame Ford wasn't also nominated, it's one of his best and most unusual performances, he really has a gift for light comedy, but nobody else ever seemed to tap it, except Spielberg in some scenes in the Indy movies.

Best line:

Yes, she was. People tend to like to bash her these days, but in the 80's and early 90's with Working Girl, Something Wild, Body Double and even Born Yesterday and Milk Money she was quite appealing.

Agree with you all the way. I was so bummed for Sigourney Weaver that year. Nominated for this film (Best Supporting Actress) and Gorillas In The Mist (Best Actress) and she didn't win either.

The movie with all that 80s hair!

Also, Carly Simon won the Oscar for Best Original Song for "Let the River Run".

Of course, dunno how I forgot that. Wikipedia's listing is confusingly divided between nominations and wins, and I forgot it won one.

That's what is so sad, because although I never thought she was a Great Actress, she was a capable one.

After Milk Money, though, I just don't know what happened. Especially on television appearances (that sitcom she briefly did with Sarah Gilbert and Mark-Linn Baker was the worst) - it's like she can't remember her lines and when she does give them she looks distracted and like she just isn't paying attention. She also seems just a beat or two behind everyone else.

It's really a shame, because she had good comic timing.

Oh, and I know it's on the "bad movie" side of the list most of the time, but I quite like Shining Through - probably my favorite of her films. It finally came out on DVD a few years ago, and is something I'd really like to own on Blu. It's a compelling movie with a great cast - you just have to get over believing her as a war spy, but if you can - it really does work.

In any case, I'll pick this one up - I never got the DVD, so it will be a treat - I haven't seen it all the way through, just a clip here and there on TV, for 20 years.

One of my favorite movies of all time! So glad to see some love for it. I'm a sucker for a WWII spy movie, and SHINING THROUGH has everything - romance, suspense, exotic Berlin locations, sweeping score, and great cast - Melanie, Michael Douglas, Liam Neeson, Joely Richardson, John Gielgud. I think people misunderstood the movie at the time, it's not meant to be gritty and realistic, it's a stylized, old-fashioned, soapy romantic thriller. I saw it six times in the theaters as a kid

I would give anything to see it on BD, maybe Fox will license it to someone - Twilight Time is not an insane idea, since the score is beloved by score buffs, and TT started out as a label devoted to releasing somewhat obscure films with iconic scores, thus the isolated score feature they always have.

Don't remember too much about this one since I've only seen maybe once or twice when it was released. But I love me some 80's movies, so I'll be picking it up.

.......NOW WHERE THE HELL IS MANNEQUIN!!
