This may have been closer to the original story, but eveything about the film was terrible. Easily Burton's worst film, Easily Depp's worst performance, terrible CGI, sorry excuse for Ompa Loompas and just a bunch of rediculousness. Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory wasn't just great because of Wilder's performance, it has heart, it makes you feel something, the characters are relateable and there is an atmosphere to the film. Charlie And The Chocolate Factory had NONE of theses qualities.

Tim Burton's interpretation of the Oompah-Loompahs was just downright stupid.

Whole film was completely devoid of the charm and wit that made the original so entertaining.

If you think this is Burton's worst movie then you have not seen Dark Shadows.

And the Oompa Loompas were fine.

The only reason people hate this movie is because of nostalgia. Yes, Wilder is fantastic in it. However, the Oompa Loompas looked horrible. Plus, I don't care for the golden goose room over the squirrel.

I have never seen the Gene Wilder version, and I love Tim Burton's version, which is an excellent adaptation of the book.

I never liked this newer version and I really wanted to. With Tim Burton directing, it should've been great but it just felt lifeless. The original had more heart and felt real. This was more like an animated movie with way too much CG. Depp was also too weird and his backstory was awkward.
Whether this is more like the book or not it just doesn't measure up to the charm of the original.

Hoping for a Digibook on this, enjoyed this version much more than the 70's version.

Why? I think it should be a given that if you post it, it is your opinion.

It's interesting that so many love the 1971 film much more because it's a more 'heartfelt' film, however it was really one giant product placement for a new 'Wonka' bar. That's why it was renamed Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.

I grew up watching the 1971 film so have a lot of nostalgia for it, but I equally enjoy the Burton film. At the end of the day IMO both are as good as each other, but for different reasons - one is a light-hearted musical, the other is a darker more faithful adaptation, and let's be honest the original novel is pretty dark.

No, it's because the original is a good film and this is a bad one. Willy Wonka is a weirdo with daddy issues because his dentist father wouldn't let him eat candy? Good lord.

In regards to the comments about the original being a lighthearted musical, have we watched the same film? It was and still is a dark film; darker than the woeful Depp version. Wilder plays Wonka like a maniac much of the time and a mischievous imp at others, the children are portrayed as being in real danger inside the factory, the adults are portrayed as being just as gluttonous & nasty as the children ("It's your husband's life or your case of Wonka bars!"), the psychedelic tunnel scene is terrifying, etc. For a candy bar commercial, it's wild stuff.

Burton's film is a silly cartoon wherein Depp does his best Crispin Glover impression (there is no question that Twister from 1989 inspired his performance). It's a garish piece of studio product from a director that lost his "Pure Imagination" long ago. It doesn't really matter how much closer it adhered to the source novel when the execution was so dank and misguided.

Different strokes, I guess.

Everything up to the appearance of Wonka is vasty superior in this version. The ending is also much more satisfying. The middle section is certainly better in the 1971 version.

Although some things were changed (like the date for the tour into the factory), that's no reason to "hate" the final version. In my opinion, the version from the 20th century is the better version. The 21st century version is too static, it doesn't have any heart put into it. Plus Gene hates the new version.

I agree that Dark Shadows was worse, but the Oompa Loompas were NOT fine. First of all, out of every little person in Hollywood, they pick the ugliest one. Second, they CGI his body over and over again. The Oompa Loompas go from being unique people in the original, to being the clone army of the empire in the new version.

I love both movies for different reasons.
I find Burton's film really, really funny.
I'll never forget the first time I saw it with a friend and that early scene with the melting/fire animatronic show had us on the floor. I kid you not. I laughed so hard and so long I thought I was going to die.

Even though the original was a huge thing in our family growing up, there are a few things in the original I can't watch at all...oh like grandpas big number once he gets out of bed, the mom's big solo and the bubble scene.

At least Wonka had development in this version.

The only thing I find dark in the original is the boat ride.

Have you never read the book?

Now I will agree with you that Burton has lost his imagination. The man hasn't made a good movie since Sweeney Todd.

Of course Gene hates the new version. It isn't his. It is no different than Stephen King hating Kubrick's version of The Shining because it improves the suspense and scare factor the book lacked.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is a rare gem for me in that I typically dislike remakes and find them needless, desperate cash grabs that tarnish the magic of the original versions (Karate Kid, anyone?). But I really enjoy this one, just about as much as I enjoy the original that I grew up with. Both films have great qualities that give them tremendous replay value, and both can co-exist without one or the other being the "superior" version. Quite a feat!

My daughter ran this one into the ground when she was 3-5, so I've never picked this up on blu. But now enough time has passed that I will likely go for the 10th anniversary release. Also need to pick up the original!
