Default Best 2.0 player to get if you have an old receiver?

My receiver doesn't have HDMI out or analog outs. Only coaxial & optical, plus it doesn't have the new encodes or whatever, just DD 5.1 & DTS. I've been looking at the 350 & PS3 but don't know what I should get. I want 2.0 profile though for sure so....

Thanks.

If your receiver does not have HDMI or multi-channel analogue INs, you wont be able to do lossless, regardless of upgrading to a play that decodes.

Sorry....look like its time for a new receiver as well.

One of the good things about having to buy into a HDMI Audio capable AVR is .... You get to enjoy HDMI Audio.

It's worth it to upgrade and if you like Home Theater ..... it's really just a matter of time anyway.

Ok, but let just say I don't want to spend 400+ dollars on a new receiver right now (maybe in a year or so though...). What BD player would you recommend?

I would still recommend you buy the PS3. I think it's the only 2.0 player available currently anyway. It functions perfectly as a Blu Ray player but it does a lot more too (CD, SACD (20,60, or 80GB versions), Upconverted DVD, Games, MP3, MP4, Jpeg, Internet .. tons of stuff.)

(That's what I did. And for a year I used it with my older Denon 2700 via optical cable and the sound was great but HDMI-Audio and lossless sound had to wait till recently when I upgraded the AVR.)

Alright, I'm gonna get a PS3. I've looked online the 40G model is selling for $399. Now the weird thing is I live in Toronto, Canada and the price here is $399 as well. Generally everything is more expensive here, so I don't know what's up. I normally would go down to Buffalo to buy stuff like this. Do you think the stores down in the US (such as Target) would have it for cheaper even though it's listed as $399 online.

Thanks.

Hi,

No... It's $399 here for sure. The only thing stores can do to make the price seem lower (for purposes of competition) is to give away something with it.

I think the canadian dollar is going further these days against the american dollar. Good news for you.

Good Luck,

Brian

So with a PS3 can you connect to a non HDMI receiver through optical or coaxial? Will you then get DTS or DD in 5.1? I want to get a blu ray player but don't want to upgrade my receiver yet either. I would be happy with lossy soundtracks in the mean time as long as they are still 5.1. Do any of the standalone units also do this?

Typical "PS3 Rules" mentality.. heh.

Your BEST option if you can afford it is the Panasonic BD50 at the moment. Profile 2.0 AND it has 5.1 analog outs so you get the 2.0 stuff and the HD sound.

Of course it has its flaws but there's always the new Pioneer supposed to be coming out later this month.

Otherwise you have to decide what's more important, downloading trailers or getting the HD sound...

$300 more dollars just to use the 5.1 analog connection? nah, id be happy with optical and an option to surf the net or play video games.

Yeah,

I would say the PS3 does more then HD trailers.

It plays (surprize) video games for one thing and if buying expensive new games isn't for you then you can still have a round with the latest games for free via the demos that are available. (Video games aren't everyone's cup of tea but sometimes while waiting for everyone to get ready for the movie they can provide some fun for the guests.)

One thing I love about my PS3 is when friends are over for one reason of another we often take pictures. Then before watching something we can put the flash card from the digital camera into the PS3 and enjoy a fancy slide show with music from the hard drive.

It's quite a bit more then just a Blu Ray, Upconverting DVD, Upconverting CD, SACD player.
