I’m getting a kick out of all the Marvel versus DC VFX stuff. Guys, these are some of the ugliest movies of all time. They have yet to produce a single great VFX shot. These are glorified made for TV movies and a yearly diet of garbage for the masses.

Yeah, and the insistence of using CG suits for him and Spidey ALL of the time means there's more work to do and less time to do it in. Was Thanos himself amazeballs? For my money, yes, though I think I'm right in saying you weren't terribly impressed with him either? It's not so much the quality of that effect but the believability of the performance that sells it for me, if that makes sense, and as I can see into Thanos' eyes and detect a presence there then it works, but the stuff with Spidey and Stark and their heads sticking out of all-CG suits still falls short. It didn't work when Lucas was doing it almost 20 years ago in the SW prequels and it doesn't work even now, and the less said about Banner in the Hulkbuster the better. Hulkbuster itself: awesome. Human head sticking out of the top: awful. I don't even like the nanosuit design for Iron Man either, it's too smoothly form-fitting and has this inherent sort of clean unbelievability about it, whereas as least with the more mechanical-looking suits they can rough them up a bit and give them a bit more grit and texture.

I think Thanos looks great, but his interactions with practical elements and actors doesn't work sometimes. Like him
[Show spoiler]picking up Thor by the chestplate
or
[Show spoiler]dragging Gamora by the arm
. Weirdly he looks his best in
[Show spoiler]Wakanda
, under the scrutiny of full sunlight.

I thought that most of that stuff meshed rather well, particularly in HDR.

Black Panther has a lot of "under the radar" CG stuff that is invisible.

HDR definitely helps. Even Black Panther looks noticeably better in HDR, though still on the lower end of what VFX should be capable of these days. (Caught some of Dead Man's Chest on TV over the weekend, it's sad that those VFX look better than 90% of what we get these days.)

Really wanna get Rogue One in UHD soon. All those VFX (including Tarkin) looked great in Dolby, so I hope those complaints quiet down once people see it in HDR. Still think it should've won the VFX Oscar; the work in Jungle Book hasn't held up particularly well IMHO.

Oh gawd I loved what they did with Tarkin. Again, as with Thanos: maybe not 100% real but I found him 100% believable thanks to the underlying mocapped performance. And yes, as good as Rogue One looks now I think the 4K HDR version will smash it outta the park.

ILM were at the peak of their game on those latter two (of the first three ) Pirates movies, Davey Jones really does look incredible.

As do most of these types of movies nowadays, but it's not the invisible stuff that people are complaining about

Well with WB's promised support of newer HDR technologies and this becoming as widely popular and successful movie that it has with arguably the best VFX of the year I could easily see this having all the bells and whistles on the 4K release, or at least I hope it does. Give it both DA/DV and 10+ so everyone gets the best possible picture or even go the IMAX ENHANCED route with how heavy the IMAX promotion has been for the film as well. All would be awesome. But regardless I definitely believe when Aquaman comes out it'll be the best UHD WB will have put out yet.

Triple-decker would be a good place to start.

I’ve said it before and it’s already been said on this page, but let me know when a film’s visual effects beats Dead Man’s Chest or At World’s End. I’ve waited 12 years now.

I think the last time I was really WOW'd by a movie's VFX was Rogue One, and that was specific to Tarkin. Before that, Life of Pi. Maybe Dawn of the Apes and Interstellar, but that's about it for the 2010s. Not saying they're the only movies with great VFX, just that we get kinda the same cookie-cutter, assembly line stuff in so many movies that it takes a LOT to really give us something we've never seen before.

Dawn is one of my top 10 movies of all time, but unfortunately War made the effects age poorly(they’re still great and they were revolutionary at the time).

I honestly didn't see much of a leap in VFX quality between Dawn and War. Between Rise and Dawn, absolutely. But that may have been because I didn't think War was all that great in general.

Still can't believe Maurice is CG. Bad Ape looks amazing most of the time as well.

Even in Rise Maurice looks abso-****in'-lutely incredible, the rest of them improved further for Dawn but I also don't see some vast jump between Dawn and War in terms of the VFX.

Never said there was a vast jump, but look at the hairs and fluidity of motion and it’s much improved in War. Dawn is a much better movie, but War obviously has better visual effects.

I'm known as a "CGI hater" but I think Thanos looks pretty amazing.

I love CG, always have. The Abyss, T2, Jurassic Park, Avatar, my mind was blown! But this comic book tripe needs to go away.
