Although I am generally loath to dive into preorder-stuff, this game looks good and the deluxe package looks to have some nice goodies in it.
So, my question is to those who have played this game. I get the impression that it's a more action-orientated Oblivion- or Diablo-type game, but is it good? Enemies? Story? Gameplay? Loot? Etc... Thanks! |

Is it good? Quite possibly the best game on PS3 so far if you like RPGs. Enemies? I don't know exactly what you are asking. The enemies are varied, unique, and interesting. The story is decent, but it doesn't really matter. The personal enmity you feel towards the enemies and the feeling of overcoming the difficulty to finally triumph can really suck you in to the world. Items, it has them? You get various weapons which you can upgrade with "consumables". Each weapon has a different style. Killing stuff AND escaping back to town gives you souls which you can use to buy spells/items/repair/level up. However, you don't get credit for the souls until you get back...so if you die you lose them, leaving a "blood spot". If you get back to the blood spot before you die again, you get the souls back. If not, you lose them. Do not be fooled, this game is *hard*. You'll be running along and trip a trap and it'll instantly kill you. The next time you'll dodge the trap trigger, run a bit further, and a skeleton archer will shoot the trap trigger and it'll kill you. The next time you realize you can dodge the trap after it's set off, only to fall into a pit you didn't notice the first two times and die. ![]() When you die it's not game over, you just come back as a ghost with half hit points, making the game way harder. To get back to life you have to beat a boss. |

Hey thanks for the response. I suppose I could have tailored my question a bit better. I definitely get that the game has hack-and-slash aspects to it, and I was wondering a bit more about the RPG elements and the overall depth to the game in that regard.

From an "level" standpoint, you pick a class which gives you a base set of stats and some basic spells and/or armor. You buy stats one at a time using souls. Each stat costs more than the prior stat, and it ramps up pretty quickly. I have no idea if there is a level cap or not, but it takes ages to level after a while. The stats are your standard stuff like Magic, Willpower, Strength, and Luck.
To use Magic or Faith(clerical spells) you have to have a talisman. Depending on your starting class you may or may not have either of these. Once you get one, you can learn spells, again by spending souls. You can go anywhere at any time in theory, although there are certain areas blocked off, and there are plenty of high level guys even in low level areas, so you'll do a lot of backtracking. I don't think the order you tackle stuff really changes the story in any way, although I never really tried an alternate order to find out. One last thing, if you get involved in the online you can turn areas towards Light or Dark. You go more light for repelling PvP-style invaders, and you go more dark for being a PvP invader and succeeding in killing your target. Several events and areas only happen if you are light or dark enough. The more dark you are the more challenging the game is (which is hard to notice, it's so hard to start with) Last edited by Terjyn; 08-13-2009 at 02:10 AM. |

This game keeps popping up on my radar as something I simply must get...
It seems to come and go on discussion forums; however. Bad PR for it or something? I just have this gut feeling I really need to get this game and it's going to be insanely awesome. I'm kind of excited. |

This game is frickin hard! So hard it won't even let you pause the game!! LoL. Not sure how many people have played this game, it's pretty cool game just really difficult. There's some cool online aspects of the game. You can leave messages (hints) in the game so other people can see it and help them out in their own game. Or you can be a jerk and be a bad guy and kill other players trying to play the game. HHHmmm...I might play it tomorrow...

I played this game in the very beginning of March (Play-Asia was super fast with shipping for once). I was totally spellbound for the week it took me to finish it (~50 hours first time through).
If there's one aspect I value in games it is atmosphere. Demon's Souls is immense in that aspect. The game has a story but it's not really needed as just being in the game environment is soo enriching. Horror games like Silent Hill and Siren are terrific games. Their gameplay is ok but the mood of just being there is something else. Demon's Souls has that but it's also blessed with very addictive, tense and thrilling gameplay. Could very well be my favorite game so far this gen. I'm seriously considering re-dipping with the US special edition. Also, the game is hard but it isn't hard in a soul destroying way. I like to play my games on normal and I had 'only' 130-150 deaths or so when I finished it hehe. You will respect it and when you die you will blame yourself. I would say the game hits almost a perfect balance throughout, the biggest learning curve is in the first third or so as you figure out the nature of this thing (though it tries it's best to keep you off balance all the way through). You toughen as a player and you will love it for it. Last edited by Wollan; 09-04-2009 at 09:16 PM. |
