Watched this again last night because jerks like Geoff have to tempt me to do so. I love the film look of it, so textured in the jungles. I also like most of the first two acts, but man that third act is just too silly for me. I wish I could get over it. Act one goes out of its way to show those raptors would kill him the second he turned his back, yet act three has them following him around like puppies. So weird.

Anyway it's funny you guys mention the score. My 2.1 setup died a while back and I switched to headphones, which I found let me hear movie scores much better. Watching JW on headphones for the first time I definitely noticed how well done the score was.

And those dorky control room folks get plenty of other funny moments. As for Bryce, Pratt and the kids I never had much of a problem with them first time around, but surprisingly Vincent D'Onofrio seemed a bit more three dimensional, and I don't just mean his gut. I'm still not quite sure how Irrfan Khan is playing his character though (one minute he seems kind and benevolent, the next he's an arrogant dick, then back again).

I loved the Giacchino score (natch) and the action is terrific, that final fight between the Indominus and the big T is a thing of beauty. I suppose I just turned off the critical part of my brain (well, not all the way, but close enough) and soaked it all in. Maybe I should never comment on movies unless I've seen them at least twice? Not sure if I could tolerate Only God Forgives again though
I think the key to really enjoy it is to take it as its own thing, and not expect it to be a perfect match to Jurassic Park (something I don't entirely blame people for doing since it invites those comparisons on itself by referencing the original quite a bit). It's a very different movie, tonally very different from the original film. While JP is a lighthearted adventure film, it does take itself seriously and strives for a certain sense of "realism" or believability, JW however just isn't shooting for that.

It's much more tongue-in-cheek, it's got this self-aware sense of humor to it and is shamelessly unrestrained in its crowd-pleasing. The action is big, loud and crazy and while the first two films made some attempt to make their dinosaurs feel like animals (still movie monsters, but there was a balance), JW continues where JPIII left off and approaches its prehistoric critters more like fantastical beasts. If they were 50% monsters when Spielberg was in charge, they're pure monsters now. The dinosaurs pull off crazy physical feats that no real animal possibly could and are anthropomorphized like never before; they think and act in very human ways. The completely mad and endlessly entertaining final battle illustrates this perfectly.

When it comes down to it, JW has a lot more in common with the monster movies of the '50s and '60s - discarding any semblance of logic in favor of insane, over-the-top spectacle - than it does its 1993 predecessor, and if taken as a sort of modern update/counterpart to those old camp classics it's a lot of fun.

Sure, but I wasn't annoyed with it because I was comparing it to JP as the paradigm of what a JP film should be, though. I very much took it for what it was initially, it was just a bit too smug and self-serving for my tastes. Now that I've gotten used to that "HA HA, aren't we clever?" vibe I've found myself enjoying it a lot more, though I still keep thinking of Lego Movie every time Chris Pratt speaks.

No word yet if this will be available in a Blu set, but on October 16th there will be a new DVD set that includes Jurassic World and a brand-new Lego film and other related bonus features called "The Indominus Escape".

Why do people care so much about the high heels? Before the Internet, I'd bet that a small inconsequential detail like that would never have been talked about ad nauseam.

Because it's just stupid to run from a humongous carnivore in shoes that aren't designed for running, jumping, or any activities that working in a giant park might lead to. Someone in the film said on a podcast that Dallas-Howard took the heels off between takes because they were so uncomfortable. That alone says it all.

I love the movie, btw. The heels don't take me out of it, but I can't argue with those who are.

They're talking about a movie where dinosaurs that are brought back from extinction into our modern world with the power of pseudo-science. If people can suspend their disbelief with that, then why can't they with something that's actually possible in real life?

I agree to an extent, but even in comic book movies and sci-fi, you can still criticize a lack of common sense, if something stands out as much as the heels in JW clearly have for so many.

It's an incredibly huge nitpick that I can't believe was ever an issue.

I think people saying it is sexist are being ridiculous, however it is a silly thing for her character to do. However that is intentional, and Pratt's character calls her out for it in the movie. Howard also said keeping them on the whole movie was her idea. Basically it was part of her "so professional she misses out on life" character arc. For some that is sexist, which... okay... but in any event, it is what it is.

It's actually pretty similar to Alan Grant's character arc in the original movie, just with a woman. I doubt any kind of offense was intentional.

I agree that her running in high heels was representative of her character. To her, someone who has spent their professional career (and probably her life) being so tight-laced, running in high heels was probably the equivalent to anyone else running in sneakers; it just came naturally.

Is this movie really as offensively sexist as people make it out to be?

Yes. BDH runs around in a thong, while Sean Connery comes in and slaps her ass. Also, there's a giant banner in the background of a shot, that reads "Fem@les r stupod"

That's not something that needs to be elaborated on. It either is or is not.

If you think it *is* sexist then the "burden of proof" is on you.
