As for who did this or that, it doesn't matter.

I saw this film in IMAX and honestly, I think it will take a step back on BLU. I'll still pick it up, but IMAX added another level to it.
True, it will be a day one buy for me, I cannot wait to see the detail on Blu!! Hopefully Cameron packs the Blu (second or third disc) with a ton of additional features, making of, science behind, deleted scenes, storyboard, etc.. that is what I am excited for also!

I enjoyed the movie overall. The FX and 3D effecvts were quite well done. Unfortunately most of the Humans come across as stupid and cruel with lame dialogue.

I did the same thing when we first see the seeds of Eyewa. However, I took it one step further and waved my hand to brush it away when my attempt at blowing it away failed.

I had the same reaction. The subtle 3D effects generally helped to make world of Pandora a much more real place.

I hope we ll get aliens before that but I think Abyss can coincide
I really hope it will be True Lies : love this movie !
Aliens will be in the Alien Quadrilogy, but don't think it will be this to coincide with Avatar's release since James Cameron only did the 2nd film

So, by that rationale, Toy Story et al are piles of steaming crap, with no redeeming features.

How can you, in all seriousness, sit at your PC and state it takes absolutely no talent to make a 'computer movie'. I would argue that it takes a lot of talent to create a wholly digital character and bring it to life.

Yes, CGI can be overused and doesn't always make for a good film. But, when used correctly it can create believable worlds and characters that could not be achieved any other way.

Did they crop it for IMAX or open it up?

The cgi in the trailers is unfinished and unlikely to have its final colour grading, hence the trailer isn't a prime example of what to expect from the blu.

its not cropped, they opened it up. Though I believe it was framed for 2.39:1, with the extra image space in imax essentially bieng dead space to help immerse the viewer.

I just want to put it out there that Avatar has a 95% chance of being one of the most epic Blu-Ray demo discs out there. Just wanted to get that out there.

Yes, yes, oh heck yeah. It would be a crime if this baby wasn't packed to the gills with bonuses, especially since it's suppose (probably is) to be a huge next step in film-making. Pack the bonus stuff in.

So true. It's easy to say films with computer effects are garbage, but d*** if Pixar, Iron Man, or Lord of the Rings don't make that statement a joke. I don't know about Avatar, and when I saw the trailer I thought "Another CG spectacle with no substance". I had to remind myself that it may actually be an excellent film. I heard good things/reviews about it, so it can't be a total waste.

Plus, the statement about "computer" films taking no talent is such a load of crock, it's not funny. It takes a lot of work to make any animation, let alone computer. You have to, after writing a story and storyboarding, design the characters and their world, model and rig (make them movable) said characters and environment, animate them, then render them out. And that's not even considering voice acting and lip sync, music, or editing. So it takes talent to make a "computer" film. And if not, it sure as heck takes patience at least.

I guess that sums it up quite nicely. CGI is a tool and as such the results depend on the guys using it. As we all know a movie isn't only defined by the image/video but the story, dialogues, actors, sound etc. therefore stating that a movie is bad because of the use of CGI is silly.
Sometimes CGI is inappropriate, like in Indy 4 were it just stands out and ruins the experience. But in Avatar it was almost seemless, everything fits together perfectly just like in Transformers, everything looks just "real".

Avatar in all its 3D/visual glory and some truly emotional moments, which remembered me of Princess Mononoke, sadly is riddled with stereotype characters, poor dialogue and foreseeable turn of events.

For me it was one of the gas shells (during the tree attack) that raced right through the screen into my face that did it, I tried to evade it as a reflex and I wasn't the only one

IMAX or go home.

I think the shell got everyone.

BTW, the reason why the humans seemed like idiots is because the place was full of nothing but outcast and lifer grunts, a few scientists and greedy corporate people. All the "normal" humans were many, many lightyears away.

It's cowboys and indians all over again.
