Looks like only the first three episodes are credited on IMDB. He’s down as directing one of them, but has written all three, so I guess he’s written the series but stepped away to do his other Netflix series Midnight Mass.
The other guy listed for directing the other two episodes is the guy who did Eli last year, so we’re in...someone else’s hands. ![]() Trailer looks good, better than the teaser. Big departure from the novel as with Hill House, so I’m not too worried, although it feels a little more sacrilegious than that one was. Turning of the Screw is pretty particular in what it does, where as Hill House just needs a spooky manor and a collection of central characters. Last edited by Foggy; 09-23-2020 at 05:54 PM. |

I thought Flanagan directed all episodes like he did with Hill House, but I see now that last October he tweeted this list of directors for episodes:

5-episodes in.
On social media, I've seen lots of fans of Hill House expressing disappointment in the new series. I don't think it's poorly made, or anything to such an extent that I would call it 'bad'; However, I think they made a mistake by kind of marketing this as a 'horror'-themed series following the success of Hill House--as well as the expectation that comes from adapting 'The Turn of the Screw'. It works well as a drama. It's well-written and directed, and carries a heavy heart -- but the horror undertones are extremely minor, and not particularly scary or frightening this time around. I'm still enjoying it overall, though. Enough to still want a third volume. |

As for episode 6, I have no idea what's going on with the uncle... [Show spoiler] Maybe this iteration needs it's own topic, because it's not associated with Hill House. I'm surprised Netflix didn't retroactively name the show "The Haunting of..." and then put Hill House and Bly Manor as the season names like a real anthology would. They treat it as two separate shows, which they basically are, apart from sharing three actors. |

This needed to be a movie of around 2, maybe 2.5 hours long. So much backstory for everything; Flanagan’s literally going into the opposite direction of “the less you know, the better.” The epilogue worked best for me, but I don’t know that’s the case because I appreciated the writing or just knowing the end was near.

On episode 4 now. It's certainly not poorly made, but it's also not clicking with me at all either. Episode 3 just really draaaaaggged.
[Show spoiler] . This just feels really dragged out, but where Hill House had fantastic characters I wanted to see their whole life stories for, these ones just aren't all that interesting. I honestly don't know if I'll finish this one out. There's also a total lack not only of scares, but of creepy atmosphere. There's just genuinely nothing creepy about this season in the slightest so far. And it's not a case of "oh that doesn't scare me", it's literally just not trying to be a horror series, which may be part of the point, but it's very disappointing to me. I've watched all 9 now, and throughout I kept thinking this could've been told in February or something, [Show spoiler] and that goes with what I'd been thinking. It's a fine story on it's own, albeit too many episodes, but being a followup to Hill House on top of premiering in October gives it a certain expectation that it just doesn't live up to because it's not that kind of story... more dramatic thriller than horror.

I liked the first several episodes, but I agree the middle episodes dragged quite a bit.
I have one episode left, and barring something extravagant, I'll have to revise my initial thoughts and say that if they can't come up with anything more riveting for a third series, I think they should stop after this. The middle episodes become sappy and melodramatic, with repetitive piano loops playing in the background, with never-ending time loops and boring dialogue. This is a far cry from Hill House. Again, not poorly made -- just... boring. |
