I got my DUNE Blu-ray the other day. Any one else notice the spelling mistake in the spec section on the back cover? Instead of "Francais", they write "Fracais". Come on proofreaders! Even if you stole everything from the HD-DVD, you still got to check for spelling mistakes!

Got it for $20 at Walmart today. My Walmart is definitely starting to up their selection of Blu's by a big amount. I'd say maybe 20% of all their video stock is BR now, compared to just having only the 8 newest BR's of the moment.

got it yesterday.
A question about the audio. When I play it the audio sounds "off"--almost as though there is an echo.
I don't have a fancy surround set up (yet) -just my PS3 and then using the speakers on my TV (a Sharp Aquos).
I'm going to swap the disc for another one, but i was wondering, do you guys thing the disc is buggered or is the odd sound an effect of running a lossless DTS 5.1 audio track through just 2 channel?
I've not heard anything like this on any other discs I've got, and most of them now are at least 5.1

on the plus side the PQ was great. I've seen this film dozens of times and this is the best I've seen it. I'm sure some will complain about how it highlights some of the dated FX, but for the most part i think the psychical FX have held up pretty well.
The sets and costumes look fantastic.

cheers for any help with the audio.

God...the IGN review just frigging ripped this thing a new one, giving the whole package a mere "5/10" rating, overall.

Even the improved picture quality, which everyone seems to be raving about, wasn't enough to impress this guy. (Guess I'll be finding out tomorrow, which is when my copy should be arriving, courtesy of Amazon.)

Those turds need to stop reviewing BD's...They are all Xbots and are still butt hurt over the fact that blu beat out hd-dvd. They also reviewed Minority Report and lashed out at it as well. MR is one hell of a transfer.

The transfer seems almost identical to the French release to my eyes. Maybe 3.75/5. Not bad in places, but nothing to shout about.

The sound is excellent.

Ever.
Not sure what IGN was expecting... he criticizes the flesh tones as being inaccurate one scene to the next. Has he seen the 35mm print for DUNE? It has strange, maniuplated color tones for many scenes. IMO the blu-ray is doing a very, VERY faithful job replicating the look (and sound) of the film (see my review at dvdfile.com: http://www.dvdfile.com/reviews/blura...dune-bd-review).

This blu-ray disc is LIGHT YEARS ahead of the PQ on the french BD which I also own and compare directly to in my review.

From IGN's review of Gladiator....

Quote:
Video and Presentation

As the first Blu-ray release in Paramount's Sapphire Series next to Braveheart, Gladiator undergoes one of the finest and most meticulous video transfers we've seen. Gladiator has been one of the most eagerly awaited Blu-ray releases since the format's inception and when it comes to sheer visual integrity, fans will not be disappointed. Although the precise technologies at work have not been detailed, it is clear that the video has been inspected with a fine-toothed comb. As a byproduct of its iconic director, Gladiator's visual composition goes through various color stages -- drab and gray in the first act during the barbarian wars, warm and yellow during Maximus' imprisonment, and a more neutral, naturalistic range during the latter acts in Rome. Through them all, however, the composure of the disc is absolutely staggering, with unprecedented detail and vibrance. There is absolutely no evidence of compression or grain, despite the 10-year lapse between theatrical and Blu-ray release. The Sapphire Series Blu-ray of Gladiator is a testament to the true potential of the format.

Score: 10 out of 10
'Nuff said.

I found the image quality to be excellent considering the condition of the film. There were small imperfections that were present on the film that made it on the transfer; however, I have no problem with these issues. It was certainly very film-like and by far the best I have seen it in memory (I saw it in the theater, but that is too long ago for any comparison by my limited mind).

The sound was wonderful. Without a doubt this was better than I have ever heard it. This gives me great faith in the other cult classics that Universal will be releasing. I was worried that Flash Gordon might not sound great, but after this, I have no worries.

What this Blu-ray does is make me realize what amazing production values went into this flawed film. It is a favorite of mine despite its flaws, and I despise the longer and longest Alan Smithee versions. If you like classic science fiction or this specific movie, it is a must buy.

Dune looks great on Blu-ray, the best it's ever looked by far on a home video format. I just wish Universal had used a more pristine print or at least digitally cleaned it up a bit.

The French Dune BD looks and sounds great and has the better graphics on the box and menu. However the PQ is a little too bright; perhaps to smooth out the flaws. I don't know why.

The new Universal Dune BD has the usual "faces in the sky" poster art and standard menu. The A/V is much better with an aggressive contrast boost plus louder and fuller sound. Some debris becomes more visible and colors might be overly rich. However; I think it looks and sounds more like a Lynch film with the deep hues and darkness. Although there are issues with the print ... I've seen them on all copies.
If the BD was over tweaked; it's all for the best.
French Dune was great; but the new Universal is much better.

I Disagree. The very few problems are in the print, and this movie was a film print. It's much better to have a few stray analog anomalies from the film than have a digitally processed image that risks altering the natural film appearance. There are no automated tools that can do clean up without changing the look of the film to some degree... better have a natural image than one with processing artifacts but "clean".

I like this movie a lot more than I remember liking it but I still like the Sci-Fi mini-series more.

I've been itching to use the $5 Universal coupon on this movie but no one has a decent price. It's $26 at B&N, $25 at Best Buy, $20 at Walmart (but never in stock) and Target doesn't even bother carrying it. I was really hoping I might be able to get this movie for $15.

I pre-ordered it form Amazon on April 20 with Carlito's Way to get $5 off.
Dune $18.99-$2.50=$16.49
Carlito's Way $17.99-$2.50=$15.49

Not sure if they still have the deal. Even at $26.49 it is worth it. Never looked or sounded better.

edit: They still got it HERE Not a lot to pick from, 11. Apollo 13 is good and not too pricey. Order is over $25 so free shipping in the US.

Print out Walmart's price and price-match it at Best Buy.
