Perhaps what Rocshemp might be talking about is that the scenes involving the humans have that lack of film quality. Shot in digital it does have a sort of video quality to it, and digital is still catching up when it comes to looking like film. Some scenes with light coming through the windows look amazing with a ton of detail; others less so.

However, all of the Nav'i world stuff (which is most of the movie) looks absolutely stupendous and reference in every sense of the word.

This is 100% as good as the movie is ever going to look; and for my money the best image I have ever seen on the format.

Ah. Those are pointless to though, until we get some actual uncompressed screens.

Those are all reference titles as far as i'm concerned, even though i have never seen Red Cliff 1 and 2. From what i've read so far your opinion is the only one of this bluray which is not of the highest praise. In the end i respect your opinion, after all what looks marvelous to some looks awful or not up to par by others standards. In the end my eyes will be the final judge as to how i feel about this transfer.

I have a feeling Wal-Mart and Best Buy are going to get a lot of price matching on this particular movie.
I hope they don't get any people PMing it and that NO ONE buys it from them. I hope all the business goes to the retailers that are selling this at 19.99.

Anybody know if there will be English subtitles or subtitles for the hard of hearing on this barebones Bluray of Avatar?

I see Amazon reads:

Language: English
Subtitles: French, Spanish
Region: Region 1 (U.S. and Canada only. Read more about DVD formats.)
Aspect Ratio: 1.78:1

I'm curious about English subtitles.

I'm pretty sure it does have English subtitles, I think I remember seeing English subtitles in some screenshots here.

I think you may be onto something. Though I need to re-emphasize that I don't consider this disc poor or bad. It's just not the perfect image I was expecting. The somewhat hazy contrast probably stands out to me because everything else looks so good. As I said in my first post, it took me a while to figure out what was bothering me because the picture is obviously very detailed.

Likewise, the front-heavy nature of the base scenes stick out like a sore thumb compared to the enveloping jungle scenes. As for the dialogue, I think I figured out why it sounds so weird to me. The dialogue sounds as if the vocals were processed in a similar manner that is done for pop singers for their albums. It's the best way to describe what I'm hearing.

I have no arguments against that.

It has English subtitles for the hard of hearing. Spanish and Portuguese subtitles.

There are two English audio tracks (DTS-HD MA 5.1 and Dolby Surround 2.0), a Spanish dub, a French dub, and a Portuguese dub, as well as a descriptive audio track for the blind. The last four are all 5.1 tracks.

EDIT: There are no French subtitles.

I have scanned through most of the last 25 or so pages and the question of how much the actual feature film takes up on the BD-50 doesn't seem to have been answered....

Anyone know how much Avatar is using up on the disc? Thanks

Sorry. If I had a means to measure that, I would have answered your question.

Adding to what I said above I think it was a deliberate decision by Cameron to make the indoor human scenes as unappealing visually as possible. We're supposed to crave a return to the outdoors and Pandora. It's so well thought out.

What was worse than it not being in lossless was the fact that they amped it up so loud that it distorted. Very odd that they would allow that when the entire point of the trailer is to let the audience know that they're in for a quality presentation.
