If they don't release anything by Akira Kurosawa before the next sale I swear I'm going to kill myself.

We desperately need some Powell and Pressburger B&W! How many years is it since they completed that 4K resto of I Know Where's I'm Going! and its still MIA.

It's even worse in the UK, where ITV hold all the rights but won't licence them out to any UK boutique. A disgraceful situation for the country that produced the Archers.

I don't think people outside the UK realise how bad the preservation/redistribution system has got for British film. The prestige/AAA stuff is neglected as it is but the less globally-known stuff is literally rotting - even films from the 2000s are languishing without HD masters. So much is either stuck with an uninterested ITV, being slept on by StudioCanal, or is an indie film where there's either one known print or worse. The BFI can only do so much due to their registered charity status and most rightsholders act either in an obstructively hostile way or want the BFI's charity funds to top up their own preservation budgets.

And it looks significantly better than the Toho UHD. It's kinda disgraceful for Toho that the gap between the Criterion UHD and the Toho UHD is bigger than the one between the Toho UHD and the BFI BD! The comparison below shows well all of this!

I wonder if Criterion, or another studio for that matter, has any plans to release Steve Buscemi's Trees Lounge or Deepa Mehta's Elements Trilogy. These both seem like fitting choices for the label.

With this new information, I'm wondering which of the existing sets you guys think are unlikely to be upgraded to BD. I assume that all of the Kurosawa and Ozus are probably going to make it, but I'm especially curious about the Late Ray and Rossellini History Films sets, both of which I'm tempted to get in the next sale. Do we really imagine Criterion is going to revive those?

I know this is all speculation, of course, and we'll know more when we see what gets announced this month...
2 out of the 3 films in the Late Ray set, have 4K restorations completed by the National Film Archive of India.
  • The Stranger (Agantuk)
  • Enemy of the People (Ganashatru)

I haven't seen any restoration news on The Home and the World (Ghare-Baire). However, there has been substantial effort to restore all of Ray's films in the last few years. Perhaps it will be one of the 5000 films India hopes to restore.

If good restorations are available, it would make it easier for Criterion to release an upgrade. I would buy it on day one.

Did you guys notice a lot of interesting Altman titles on the Criterion Channel like ones that definitely might come out in December, or next year?

Titles that are of interest to me
Quintet Fox title odd one to see on the channel it's also stuck on DVD
California Split Criterion was planning on putting this out on Blu-Ray a few years ago yet I guess it ended up getting cancelled. I wonder if they're finally putting it out after cancelling it previously.
Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore
All the Presidents Men
Nashville back on the channel interesting I wonder if Criterion got the license back
Gosford Park
Popeye I mean Criterion put out the Wiz so I could see them doing Popeye as well just saying.
The Devils I have 0 interest in this one, but seeing it back on the Criterion Channel is strange to say the least.
Magnolia I've heard this film is a complete mind screw I only know about it due to the raining of Frogs scene in the film while the Ambulance car is driving through a frog storm.

I think a 1970s-2000s Altman box set in December would be insane, but considering how many Altman titles got added onto the Channel recently it wouldn't surprise me whatsoever. Plus it would be a good starting point for people like me whose only exposure to Altman is Popeye. As it would be great for Altman newbies like me.

An Eclipse Altman set sounds like a great idea, and if Criterion wants to do it then I say go for it.

An "Altman at Fox" set with 3 Women, Quintet, A Wedding, A Perfect Couple, and HealtH would be a neat idea. They could probably get away with it being 4K since all but HealtH have 4K masters and the rarity of that one would probably help justify the format.

I'm happy that Gosford Park is on the channel this month, I was going to blind buy it on blu ray but the arrow is out of print and the lowest I've seen it for is about $45. I'll stream it first and see how I feel about it definitely :P

Update from the person on reddit that was given one of the sets. It's a one-off that includes The Princess Bride, Eve's Bayou, and Phoenix on Blu-ray. All three were originally TIFF premieres.

Speaking of TIFF, anybody in Toronto go the the Closet Van and, if so, any rumors about upcoming releases?
