Last night, I saw Tea and Sympathy before it leaves the CC at the end of the month, and I was pleasantly surprised by it. Not only does it boast great performances by Deborah Kerr and John Kerr, but the dialogue is great, and it still conveys a timely message. I also noticed that the print was not in the best condition and was surprised to see that there hasn't been a Blu-ray release of it.

What are the chances Criterion would release it? After all, it's a Vincente Minelli film with Deborah Kerr in it, filmed in VistaVision, and I can only imagine how lush it would look with a proper 4K restoration.

I just saw this one a few nights ago and couldn't agree more! I think this is a very progressive film for its time and has aged very well. The dialogue is the real champion here, especially in the scenes where Deborah Kerr is tackling masculinity. Surprisingly, it is not as well known as most of the American classics out there though to be fair, this is Minelli we're talking about the same man who did An American in Paris, Gigi, Meet Me in St. Louis, and The Bad and the Beautiful (Among many others). This film doesn't have as much star power outside of Deborah Kerr and has probably been overshadowed by Minelli's more successful works. It's only sitting at 10K viewers on Letterboxd which is pretty low from what I gathered.

One of the top Letterboxd reviews for this film says, "oh mr. criterion? have i got a movie for you." I sincerely hope Criterion will pick this one up or Warner Archive since it seems like Warner did a DVD release of this before. The Criterion Channel's streaming copy doesn't open up with the Criterion logo so chances of it coming may not be all too likely but who knows? The transfer they have, as dirty and unpolished as it may look, brims with colors and good sharpness and clarity to it as well. This has since been included into my small mental wishlist of movies that should come to Blu-ray at least here in the US

Yeah, I think we're waiting on Warners for Tea and Sympathy. Was very disappointed after watching it on the Channel to discover there was no extant Blu.

Apparently TIFF has commissioned Criterion for a film box set for their 50th anniversary. Unsure if this is intended for retail. More details coming soon.

No they haven't. It's a set being given to 4 people who saw at least 40 out of the 50 films that were programmed for TIFF's 50th Anniversary. While details are sparse, it very likely will only contain existing Criterion releases for films that are a part of the series.

I'm honestly surprised not a single Minnelli film is in the collection considering his stature as one of the top directors of the Golden Age. Perhaps it boils down to Warner Bros. wanting to keep his releases for their Archive line, which makes some sense, especially when taking into account Feltenstein's admiration for Minnelli's work. As other posters have mentioned I'd be surprised if this doesn't come out from the Archive, but you never know. Let's not forget not too long ago Criterion worked some magic in getting the rights to release Mildred Pierce and The Breaking Point

I always assumed Some Came Running was going to get a Criterion release. Especially as Richard Linklater always championed it.

Some Came Running would have been a great candidate for release as a way to showcase Minnelli without sacrificing the two biggest potential moneyearners for the Archive in (Meet Me in St. Louis and An American in Paris). Maybe the Archive lets some of the Minnelli films get to 4k for Criterion to release, while continuing to bring more of their library to bluray. Selfishly, Id prefer this approach out of worry that doing the leg work on 4k releases would further backlog the Archive from releasing more stuff I want. Though I admit financially it's probably far more prudent for the Archive to release things on 4k to supplement the more obscure titles they release every month.

You forgot The Band Wagon. Alongside the two titles you mentioned, they are the prime Minnelli moneymakers for 4K releases from WAC.

Before the Eclipse revival was announced in August, I was planning on stocking up on the sets in that series I had never gotten around to picking up, since it appeared they were all being discontinued as stocks ran out. With this new information, I'm wondering which of the existing sets you guys think are unlikely to be upgraded to BD. I assume that all of the Kurosawa and Ozus are probably going to make it, but I'm especially curious about the Late Ray and Rossellini History Films sets, both of which I'm tempted to get in the next sale. Do we really imagine Criterion is going to revive those?

I know this is all speculation, of course, and we'll know more when we see what gets announced this month...

Of the handful of new stuff on the Channel that I checked (so I may have missed some), these open with the Criterion and Janus logos:
Undercurrent (Kozaburo Yoshimura)
Fresh Kill (Shu Lea Cheang)
La marge (Walerian Borowczyk)

We know there’s another Ray film on its way to Criterion (thanks to Wes Anderson), so I can easily see the Eclipse Ray set coming out around the same time. Have no idea about the Rossellini, but he’s a key figure in the collection and I imagine they’d at least try.

I recall Undercurrent having a new restoration a few years back and I think Criterion's name was connected to the restoration as well. Haven't heard much of this film since but another classic Japanese film ready for rediscovery.

Fresh Kill I believe was showing in a few theaters across different states with its new 4K restoration. There was a screening happening near where I lived with the director attending although I didn't know this movie well enough to go to this screening unfortunately.

Glad that there is now a chance that La Marge is getting a release. I've been interested in revisiting this one after seeing that Sylvia Kristel and Joe Dallesandro's name being connected to this project as well as Borowczyk directing it. I have never seen a Borowcyzk film before and have always been curious to know how he's like as a director. Maybe this will be one of my first watches this month.
