I'm using an Epson PowerLite Home Cinema 8500ub and a ten foot Stewart screen. I can see film grain in Ziegfeld and Cave of Forgotten dreams looks as good as the BBC Attenborough docs I have on blu.
This is like 24/96 vs 16/44.1 vs AAC 320. There is a point beyond which bigger numbers doesn't make as much of a difference any more. Yes, blu ray is higher quality, but sitting on the couch at a normal viewing distance from the screen, it isn't significant. |

By the way, with 50mbps, you should be able to theoretically stream h264 movies that are around 35-40 gb. Have you ever looked at h264 video out of a 1080p video camera at those kinds of rates? It looks pretty damn good. Last edited by bigshot; 10-03-2013 at 01:55 AM. |

Come to Los Angeles and I will be happy to show you. I work in the film business and have supervised post production. I know what I'm looking at, and I carefully test everything I use before I use it in my system. I'm not making this up.

Don't care if you are Spielberg himself. I am not buying your theory. My opinion, my choice.

The biggest plus point with streaming is been able to get films and shows that won't make it to Blu-ray. If the content is made available to everyone then great but we'll see more and more exclusives and region restrictions (and price restrictions) and a concern many consumers have. |

Physical Media (instant, high quality gratification) will never be completely replaced by Streaming Media (buffering wait time, variable quality, menu after menu, pay subscription service, rental costs, temporary availability, dependant on internet service at an additional cost, lose your internet lose your movies - go play outside).
Would you rather own your own car, or call a cab every time? (ooh thats a good analogy!) One day Bluray will be replaced, but by another physical media. Just like vinyl, beta, vhs, laserdisc, dvd, hd-dvd. Streaming media is an accessory, an add-on. Last edited by ObiTrentKenobi; 10-03-2013 at 02:22 AM. |

It's not a matter of supporting a format... if you love movies that look great, having inexpensive streaming of tons and tons high quality content is the best of all worlds. Streaming is pointing in that direction. It isn't there, but it should be encouraged to get there.

I call bull too. I have seen them ALLLLLLL on streaming. Netflix, Vudu, Amazon, Apple TV... NONE of them come even CLOSE and I'm using 40mbps fiber.. always artifacting, intermittent buffering issues due to their servers and the audio isn't CLOSE
all this using a 120 inch screen with an 11 foot viewing distance as the max |

I'm not. I'm just realistic about the future. Ask yourself why the studios are including digital copies with their discs. Maybe because they're trying to get the public used to purchasing streaming copies? No physical product, less potential for piracy, no sales lost to secondary market (used product), etc. It's coming.

What's so great about blu-ray? If the quality was there, I'd go streaming in a second. Eventually, the quality will get there. A gigabit pipe could stream a movie with better quality than the DCPs you watch in theaters.

If you do decide to stream and download your movies, the overall quality will not be superior, nor equivalent to blu-ray.
