The evidence is TOS-R and TNG-R, both now in HD alongside ENT! I think it's blindingly obvious: CBS clearly intends to convert their lucrative Star Trek TV library into HD in order to make it more appealing for syndication, streaming and digital download all over the world. Remember that they also didn't go directly into TNG-R after TOS-R finished. There was a three-year gap between them. And it was only that long because TNG-R was a different animal from TOS-R and they had to prove it was feasible. As we know, DS9-R would be an undertaking very much like TNG-R, but with the added costs of extensive CGI (either recreated or re-rendered) in the last few seasons.

I think it's also important to point out that TNG-R has been done at a breakneck pace and it's been exhausting I'm sure for the people working on it these last three years. That could be a very big factor too. A combination of burn out and "let's just wait and let the revenue from all potential distribution channels accumulate a bit more before we start again."

We may yet see a DS9-R S1 set ready by fall 2016 for the 50th anniversary. They could wait a year (or more) and still accomplish that. So let's not go too far in the other direction of complete cynicism after the tweet got everybody overly enthusiastic. We're starting to look bipolar

I'll need to think it over myself to see if I have any suggested additions. And if any other fans of DS9 have favorites to suggest, please do so. But I really think Bolty has done some outstanding work here.

Isn't that post the opinion of Trek Core not a fact from an insider at CBS.

Yes.

I think Trekcore people have been good sources of info in the past. As we know, we aren't hearing anything official from CBS at this point....

LOL. The fact that they would use that disclaimer says a lot about how much promotion they do for CBS.

Basically--"We shill for CBS video, but are not paid to do so!"

Thanks for that!

Default DS9's 2.14 "Whispers"

This is a classic O'Brien episode, with very much the feeling of a Twilight Zone episode imho. This one's a favorite at our house.

Very much agree.

From memory, when the series was released on VHS in the UK, the two episodes on this cassette were Whispers and Armageddon Game - Love both of them.

So they will post what CBS tells them? Do they post rumours like digital bits posting the rumours in 2011 of TNG coming to Blu?

I like how Bolty shows in the list, very briefly, why an episode is important and a favorite.

Bolty: Would you be willing to post your revised and corrected list? And since TOS went to 79 episodes, and since this is all just a very, very slim hope anyway, I think it's fine to go to that. And if you count The Cage, TOS really had 80 episodes....

Think of it this way. Some people said the original Star Trek probably wouldn't work in syndication because there weren't enough episodes. But it turned out that even with 79 episodes TOS was the biggest success in syndication history. 70-some episodes turned out in fact to be quite a sweet spot.

And that struck me when you said that something like 70-some episodes were needed to pick up all the threads, arcs, and favorite stand-alone episodes of DS9.

Since the standard season set has had 26 episodes, what about three of those, for a total of 78? That's right at the magic mark of TOS. And so it could still work for HD syndication and streaming.

In fact, it might even work better. Like you, I agree that the first two seasons of DS9 were the weakest. Most fans feel that way. Those seasons are one reason even some Trek fans have had trouble getting into the show. But with the most essential and best episodes rescued from those, and with the same done with the subsequent seasons (with an increasing number on the list for each of the subsequent seasons) it could become a more compelling viewing experience.

As an epic 78-episode Star Trek "miniseries," DS9 would likely find new fans. And the old fans would be pleased to finally have the best of the show in HD.

From the point of view of CBS, it might make more economic sense too. I don't know what the figures are, but if, just for instance, it costs something like c. $5 million to completely rebuild a season of Star Trek, then all 7 seasons of DS9, including the dud episodes, might be c. $35 million. That's huge for a home video project, and would take maybe four years. But a best of DS9 with three packages of 26 episodes would be a more reasonable amount of money, and might take only a couple of years.

Anyway, all of that was long wind-up to request to see your list for the whole show.

We all admit that something like this is very unlikely to happen, but since you've already written the list, I hope you'll share it.
What about character Introductions? Those seem to be missing if you cut out Seasons 1 & 2.

Good point.

Again, I would much rather that they rebuilt all of DS9. I'd buy each full season on the first day, starting with S1.

This is just a brainstorm for a possible fall back, given the reality that CBS seems to be getting cold feet on giving a green light to a rebuild of all of DS9. Is it just a choice between all or nothing? And if the choice seems to be leaning toward nothing, maybe there's the possibility of something in-between?

But you do have a point.

Like most DS9 fans, for instance, I like Garak a lot, and his intro comes in the second episode of the first season, Past Prologue. I like that episode, and would consider including it. I'm not sure if it's essential for understanding Garak or not. I honestly don't know.

Can you think of other examples?

There seem to be a lot of challenging choices in even narrowing it down to 78. Still, after years of watching one of the best science fiction shows ever made in low rez, I'd like to see at least some of it in high definition....

Again, I'd rather have all of DS9 on blu if possible. That's my preference.

Good point - maybe they'll just have to do all the episodes to make sure they don't miss anything...

(C'mon, CBS, you know you want to!)

What's all this 78 episode nonsense you keep going on about? All this because you've totally misinterpreted a statement. Honestly, get some objectivity, you're being a bit weird about all this.

I'd love to see Deep Space Nine on Blu-ray (I believe it's the best Trek TV series to date), but isn't this the thread for season 6 of The Next Generation and the individual release for Chain of Command? It's become post after post about DS9.

Outside of how DS9 plays into season 6 of TNG, creating a thread in the Wish Lists forum would be a much better place for this much discussion about the possibility of DS9 on Blu-ray.

I've seen maybe 4 episodes of DS9.
The Pilots parts 1 & 2
Trials and Tribilations and one other.... Something with Bashir and a HoloPhoner...
I know I've seen more, but those are the only ones i even kind of remember.
I would most definitely buy Every Season Day 1 if it came to Blu-Ray!
I used to not really like the show.. but I also didn't watch it or give it a chance.
But after the JJ abominations, I'm willing to explore more of the real Trek Universe!
I'll get the Enterprise Seasons, but I'm waiting for those to drop in price... $90 is too much for each season... and with the Best Buy Exclusives... I'm gonna be waiting for a long time...
Unless I'm wrong... Maybe Lavender can help with that part...

Fair enough. Back to Next Generation.

I can barely wait. Just 3 weeks until S6 of TNG.

What episodes are you looking forward to the most?

There are a lot for me, since this season is not only one of the best, but I've been avoiding watching it for years in anticipation of this release.

I'll just mention one favorite for now: Timescape. That's a mind-bending episode, and one I can't wait to see in HD....

I'm buying this the day it comes out. Chain of Command as well... I will NOT, however, be watching them until Season 7 comes out or gets officially announced with a Street Date.
Once it does, I will plan accordingly and start watching then and in Stardate Order.
I'm not waiting months between Finalies and Premiers. They should have kept it the way they were going...

You could always watch one a week, then if they release by Christmas (I'd have thought they're aiming for that) you'll be just in time for 'Part II' and if there's no announcement slow it down to one a fortnight... I've only just reached the end of S4, so by the time I get to the end of S6 I imagine S7 will be here!
