Did Blu-ray.com remove the block function? I don't think I ever used it before so maybe I'm looking in the wrong spots.

Got it?
Yeah, but movies 50 years apart (be it Bond, Godzilla or Star Wars) is going to be completely different in tone and style and production quality.

Hell, even a different production team just a few years apart is going to produce wildly different results. Shin Godzilla is 120% a different movie than G19.

Oh sure - on the secondary market for six times the MSRP. But if Toho capriciously pulls the rights (and we've seen that happen many times with the DVDs thusfar), kiss that streaming goodbye and you'll never get a set from Criterion. A perfect example? That Vincent Price set from Scream - it went out of print overnight and can't be found for less than four bills.

You do realize that you've just undercut your argument that this is an ill timed release and that Criterion will not be able to move product, right? Or are you saying that they're printing 10,000+ units just so they have something to hold the shelves down in their warehouses?

Before signing out of this thread, and I do sincerely hope everyone who purchases the set enjoys every film, here's the last of what I read for what it's worth. Just remember, it's the internet:

Quote:
"I have some answers for you-the Godzilla boxed set is titled "Godzilla: the Showa Era Films, 1954-1975. And-I do know the spine number. Can you guess? Yes indeed folks-it's spine 1 E+3. No release date, but we've started working on it. So far, the details are it's to be a hard cover, 35.6 cm X 26.4 cm, 32 page booklet with DVDs. A nice matte laminate cover, 40,000 ordered for first edition! I can't seem to upload a photo, but the cover art is beautiful."

"I was at a convention over the weekend, during which Steve Ryfle and Ed Godziszewski (the foremost American experts on Godzilla) revealed they were working on something with Criterion related to the Godzilla films in their collection. They couldn't get into specifics regarding what they were working on or what Criterion was planning to do, but they said an official announcement should be coming within a week or two."

can't believe some the nonsense on this thread. GKOTM didn't bomb it just didn't pull in the huge money needed to be considered a hit. almost $400 million isn't chump change. this will in now way impact those who are considering buying the Criterion Godzilla set. those people went to the new G film and most loved it. the movie just wasn't able to cross over to people who aren't necessarily into Godzilla. the budget was pretty high and the promo budget was way to high.

the only issue will be the price. while the reported $150 price tag amounts to only $10 a movie it is high enough to discourage the more casual fans. this won't be a xmas stocking stuffer for some parent who liked Godzilla as a kid to turn his kid onto it.

Anyone buying it at full price either has money to burn, or isn't too familiar with Criterion. It will be $75 rhe next month. It may be $75 the first day through a Criterion flash sale.

I think the $150 is a Target price and not Criterion's SRP, which will likely be somewhere around $199. So if this comes out in November (when a sale typically happens), expect the 50% off price to be $99.

I'll be pre-ordering it. I won't have to worry about stock issues when a sale comes along, and with Godzilla being my life-long passion I really don't mind paying. If anything it'll just be giving more support and could help bring along more things in the future. Bring on the Toho SFX Collection, Daimajin trilogy, and Gamera Legacy Criterion sets. Stretch this as far as it can go.

If it's the full Showa-era Godzilla set, then I'll likely pre-order.
I want to show there is a market out there - and Showa-era Godzilla has always been and will always be my favourite.

If it's most of the Showa-era Godzilla with some other Toho films mixed in, then that may dampen my enthusiasm and cause me to wait for a discount somehow. I have to deal with exchange rates, so saving some money on it would help soften the blow.

The bottom line is, his son no longer wants the box set for reasons that make sense to no one other than his family. As tragic as this news is, I feel confident that both Criterion as a company, as well as cgpublic's family, will be able to move on from this unfortunate incident, and lead meaningful, fruitful lives.

I'd rather have an extra $75 in my pocket personally. Buying it at full price is not something they're going to see and move the needle for them. It's overall sales numbers that count, and the sets are going to sell in droves come the 50% off sale. I honestly don't get the rationale of not waiting just a few extra weeks considering how long we've waited already, but to each their own.

Even at the expense of saving ~$100 it's going to be very difficult not to get this day one. I don't have money to burn but this is just one of those extremely rare times I don't think I can wait.

It's simply a test of patience. If Criterion announced this in August for a November release you'd have to wait the same amount, the difference is simply knowing it's available sooner. $75 is $75 (or $100 if Target's price is indeed wrong) no matter how you slice it, and could be used for more movies, or who knows what else in your life.

Especially - at least in my case - I already have everything. If it's round and shiny and Godzilla, it's on my bookcase. So while I really want the upgrade, another 4-6 weeks wont kill me.

Your son is too young to be watching Tarantino. Though, I would find it hilarious if you posted that OUaTiH ruined Tarantino for you.

Or it's Godzilla and I don't care about Criterion sales. Also, I know how to save money. It's not like Criterion is going to announce this set and then it comes out 2 hours later. We have a couple months to save up. How is that so hard to comprehend?

I'm sorry cgpublic but I'm with El_Fez. I'm sorry your son had a bad experience with GKOTM but with about 30 or so films (and I know I may be off) by a revolving cast and crew, it's just hard to understand how one film could dampen the love of a whole series. For me, I'm not a fan of the current Super Sentai series Ryusoulger and I DEFINITELY don't like Ohranger or Ninninger, but I still love other series and Super Sentai as a whole.

Add me. Even if some of the films are absent (and I'm dubious KK vs G will get an appearance; I will be very happy if I'm wrong ), I'm going for this set. It's very hard to resist city stomping reptiles
