I've been reading this thread for days trying to find something solid. I'm really on the fence about buying Avatar. I know I'll love the movie, but I don't want to buy it twice. I really don't care about six minutes of extra scenes. For that matter, I don't care about 30 minutes of extra scenes unless they are woven into the film--I don't wan't 30 minutes of separate deleted scenes.

If I ask my wife one more time "Should I buy Avatar, or wait?" she's going to scream.
Version 1: The theatrical version.
Version 2: The 6 minutes of footage that is being completed now is going to be woven into the film.
Version 3: The incomplete footage woven into the film to make a sort of work in progress version.

Versions 2 and 3 will be done with seamless branching.

My guess is the 4 disc Ultimate edition will look like this:
Disc 1: Versions 1, 2, 3
Disc 2: 2 hour making of doc
Disc 3: Additional bonus features
Disc 4: DVD of theatrical version

I don't think they will release the barebone Blu-ray in the ultimate pack, but that's just me. I guess only time will tell !

Will all three versions be in 3D or just the theatrical cut?

Just saw a demo of the disc at Best Buy. It looked outrageous. "They" said they had to upgrade "all" their BD players for it and that everyone else would also have to; and that this news was "all" over the net.
Hadn't heard about this.
Anybody...?

Someone said their Pioneer bluray player would require a firmware update, so other brands needing one too wouldn't surprise me.

i know they've been pushing their geek squad service to "help" people update their players so i'd take their warning with a grain of salt.

nevertheless, i think there will be a bunch of players that will need updating for this release.

I think I'm right in saying:

No word on a 3D blu-ray release yet... the ultimate edition out in November or whatever is still 2D, 3D is still somewhere down the line and we don't know what that set will include.

Both the 'new' versions will have the deleted scenes woven into the movie via seamless branching so you can chose to watch whatever version you want. BUT only the one with the extra 6-7 minutes will be a 'completed film'. The extra 30 minutes, as has been said, is some sort of 'work in progress' version. Not sure exactly what that means, but for one thing it will probably mean no special effects in the added scenes.. maybe we'll see some 2D animation or the actors doing things pre-CGI, or something. It's meant to be a 'what could have been' curiosity for fans as opposed to a complete version of the movie.

I'd say buy it now, and rent the others out of curiosity if you want to. Avatar is already 2hours 40mins as it is, it was long enough! I'd only wait for the next set if you care about extras.... OR just sell the barebones version when the new one comes out to make some of the cost back (tip - if you import a steelbook from amazon UK you'll make more of your money back cos they will be a bit rarer )

Damn. I really want the ultimate set and thought it was to be in 3D. I hope they reissue the ultimate set with a 3D version down the road or I'll have to double dip for the complete experience.

Well, watched the movie again today (my wife wanted to see it). Wasn't nearly as bad the second time through. I still had a few "oh come on!!" moments, but now that I was over the initial disappointment It was much easier to just check my brain at the door.

Heard rumors of this. I have a Panasonic DMP-BD60. I will post if my copy works or not as soon as I receive it. There has been some discussion of this already.

depends really

PQ---9/10
AQ---9/10
Story----6/10 (it's not a BAD story per se, just rather cliche'd with villains who are totally ridiculous and unrealistic and characters who were (to me) unrelatable)

I hope I don't have to do a firmware update. I have a Samsung ht-bd1250 that came with the plasma tv. From what I have read online, if you try and do a firmware update, it bricks the system. If it takes more than firmware 2.07, I am out of luck with Avatar, unless I can get HHgregg to take the system back etc.

Hey Worm,

Just curious, what kind of player do you have? Have you experienced any problems?

Cheers,
