Don't worry they will. Do you have a 3D t.v. and player, cause I hope your not expecting the crappy red & blue 3D version....that would never happen for Avatar.

Why not sign up for Amazon Prime(FREE for one month) and get Avatar with two days free shipping for only 19.99. That's the best deal.

My grocery store that I work at got 2 cases of this in today. I was shocked when I opened the cases to see we ONLY got the Blu Ray/DVD combo packs. Yet we have a 15.99 deal where you get the DVD,candy and popcorn. I wonder if it will work on the Blu Ray? We have never gotten Blu Rays before. This is gonna rock!

I have a PS3 and plan to upgrade to the new 72" Vizio (if it gets good reviews).

I want FHD3D. Not anaglyph 3D. The latter could never hope to emulate what I saw in theaters.

the big question is whether or not us that wish to forego the 3d bluray player will be able to watch it on old school 2d on our fossilized bluray players.

I work at a Samsung call center in S.C..
Today in a meeting, our supervisor told us that the BD-C6500 needs a firmware update to play Avatar.
Sorry to break the annoying news, but at least now you know.

Good question. I've read that 3D BD players can output solely either the left or right side image if you wish to watch a 3D feature in 2D (or to remain compatible with non-3D sets). But I don't know if the same would occur with a standard BD player or if we'd get a disc read error.

Thats a 2010 model. If thats true then I imagine every samsung bluray player ever made will need a firmware upgrade; are they going to release upgrades for them all or leave those of us with early models high and dry?

Some stores are selling the Avatar BLU-RAY/DVD combo movie before the April 22nd release date

I have been hearing reports that people have purchased the BLU-RAY/DVD combo movie as early as last week because some retail stores by mistake or on purpose started selling the movie early. On April 20th I saw two copies of the Avatar BLU-RAY for sell at my local Sears store for $29.99. I thought about purchasing a copy to watch on April 20th but decided not too. I do not like BLU-RAY/DVD combos. I would rather the studios offer the movie for $5 cheaper in a BLU-RAY only version. Another thing is combo movies that include both a BLU-RAY and DVD in the same package messes with the sell numbers. One really does not know if people purchasing the BLU-RAY combo title even have a BLU-RAY player yet. Some consumers get together with their friends and purchase a combo pack and they split the cost and give a DVD to one person and a BLU-RAY to another person. The result is they paid half the price for the title. Flipper disc titles protects studio revenue with a BLU-RAY on one side and DVD on the other.

I will just rent this movie on BLU-RAY instead of purchasing it. I would be interested in maybe purchasing the BLU-RAY special edition of Avatar that is scheduled for the fall of 2010. In 2011 or 2012 we should also see a 3-D version of Avatar coming on BLU-RAY. I really enjoyed the movie in a 3-D IMAX theater that uses two 2K projectors for each eye to maintain normal brightness.

P.S.
It sounds like some people are going to have to watch the 480I DVD version of Avatar until they update the firmware in their BLU-RAY players. Maybe some brands and models of players might take a while before there is a new firmware version.

Alright guys, I have Samsung HT-BD1150 that came with a home theater set and another Panasonic BMP-BD605 from Costco downstairs.

Can anyone tell me asap if these players will need a firmware update to play Avatar as well?

I'm relatively new to blu and I've never had to update my firmware. Is it something that will pop up when I put Avatar in or can I do it now in anticipation of the movie?

If the Avatar movie uses a special new BD+ encryption code then every player on the market will need a firmware update. Possible maybe the Sony PS3 and other mainstream players already received the firmware update.

Most movie titles like 20th Century fox pop up with a message that a firmware update is needed. There is sometimes no message. It depends on the movie title. Many BD-LIVE BLU-RAY players with a Internet connection will automatically notify one when a new firmware update is available (If that option is turned on in the players menu). The BD-LIVE BLU-RAY player will check for a firmware update everytime the player is turned on for some models. There are a few older profile 1.1 players with a Ethernet connection that can also receive easy firmware updates.
