The floating giant rocks are positioned in the "Flux Vortex".
Low gravity there, but it isn't a sufficient explanation to me though.
It's not explained in the movie tough
But trust me, you won't care!

OK thanks Q ,i just had to check. well at least they made an atempt to explain it. i had a horrible thought that they expected us to think just because its an alien world that mountains could float Like you say im sure i wouldnt care that much if its as good as everyone is saying

Edit: Oh you say its not explained in the movie....hmm....

I thought it was - I was under the impression that rocks were actually being held up by plants/vines (the low gravity of the planet as a whole allowing for that). I could be wrong...I'll be seeing it again tomorrow so I'll double-check. The movie itself is good but not mind-blowing - what is mind-blowing is the 3D - it's a whole new movie experience.

My son and I watched the film in 2D @ the theater. We both enjoyed the movie. My son more than I. One problem though. During several scenes in the movie where there was alot of fast running...flying... I got sorta
dizzy. Felt like my eyes were strained. After the movie I felt even worse. Took
me the rest of the evening to get my head/eyes back together. I think it's due to the new stereo cameras used in filming the movie. The fast scenes in the movie felt like I was watching my son playing one of his 360 video games. Which also makes me dizzy...nauseated.... But I will buy the BlueRay when it becomes available. Since I now know when to close my eyes or look away during the scenes that made me feel bad.

Why can't they be? Tech moves forward there was a time when movies where 4:3, B&W with no sound. And with every innovation some guy in the past saying that new one can't be because it was not done that way before.

it is mentioned but not explained, and it is not all the mountains, it is an anomaly of that planet and the area and should be taken that way. The same way one looks at the grand Canyon or some places where a giant bolder sits at top of something narrower or cars in neutral seem to roll up magnetic hill in New Brunswick.

Well there is a bit of a difference between Giant floating Islands of solid rock in the sky to the explanation of the Grand canyon which i believe was formed in the last iceage, a balancing rock ready to fall one day or metal cars being attracted to a magnetic.lol. however ive never seen the film im sure its brilliant. I just dont get the Floating mountains! its stoopid!

3D is nice, but not all the time. Talk about a major headache.

I'd like to see all the extra features in 3D also available in 2D.

Great movie, nonetheless. I'd watch it in 3D once. 3D is great, but in my mind, it's still a gimmick. Watching a 3D image on a 2D screen is always going to be gimmicky. Eventually, it will be less of a 3D image, and more of a holographic image (eventually meaning a good 20 years) that surrounds you (or a majority of your field of view). Basically surround sound, but surround video. Even then, the headaches and neckaches would be horrible!

Magnetic hill is not actually magnetic and none metal stuff appear to roll up the hill as well, it was named that way long before cars where invented and when magnetism was not well understood apart from magnets attract stuff.

As for the floating mountains, who knows exactly why they look/behave the way they do. Do you understand every "cool" phenomenon on this planet? yes this is something created for the movie, but if you dismiss stuff just because they don't make sense on earth then don't go see it, everything on there is alien.

that they are floating is not even important, it is just there to make it look more alien.

why? was it sad when colour was more then something special and only good for on occasion? how about sound? how about each and every other innovation in filming?

Im sorry i would have to disagree with you that the fact the mountains are floating is not even important. Im not dismissing it because it doesnt make sense on earth im only questioning it because it doesnt make sense in laws of physics or gravity. i like a certain explanation in my scifi as to WHY things are, as do most scifi fans and most scifi movies/shows at least atempt some form of explanation to make the unbelievable believable

As for Magnetic hill that sounds very interesting i would like to find out more about that and a logical explanation behind it unless of course its just magic

In the film, when they enter the area, I remember one of them showing how they're navigational gear(stuff like compasses or gps) begins to have problems. I thought that that meant that the magnetism of Pandora was what made the mountains float.

Yeah well even that is something, just a small reference as to why the mountains float is all i ask

but gravity is a weak force, you defeat it every time you jump, a tornado picks up a trailer, a plane takes off. You want a simple explanation that could work even here? google magnetic floating and you will get a few objects that where created to float like
this floating can

or the floating bed
http://gizmodo.com/184990/magnetic-f...ed-oh-your-god

what if those "mountains" where just boulders that where highly magnetic (instruments are useless around them due to the flux vortex) and that is why they float, just as the can or bed above? what if they are not rock (like traditionally meant) but inside them there was something extremely light and they work like a helium balloon? .... obviously the movie does not try and explain it (exept for “flux vortex in the area that makes all instruments useless) and obviously it is unlikely to ever be seen in real life, but every movie creates a reality and Pandora is one odd place in every respect. Way worst then what is called floating mountains is the fact that
[Show spoiler] every creature and some plant life are wild and natural but for some reason have connectors so the humanoids can connect to them, why would nature ever evolve that way is mind boggling

not the only place, google antigravity spots. The logical explanation is that we are wrong even though our senses are telling us something is rolling up hill they are not, for some reason we can’t tell up from down. But it looks like magic when you are there.

I hope it is not gonna happen. I watched the movie today on 3D IMAX an I was greatly impressed. But still 2D version would probably look great.

I know it is a wishful thinkin' but I wanna get a two-disc set in a digipack and some 3D lenticular slip case, not a steelie.

I wouldnt go as far as to say gravity is a weak force i thought it was the strongest force in the universe you only temporarely defeat it when you jump because you come back down again as does the trailer the tornado picked up or if that plane ran out of fuel, anyway i wouldnt want to get into a deep discussion in gravity, physics or whatever because i dont know much about them and your explanation of things in the film are very good i liked them they should of included them in the script and i will make do with the "flux vortex"
All i was originaly asking is was there an explanation because i like an explanation in my scifi sort of like how star trek likes to do of course none of that is true and most probably impossible but it keeps scifi geeks like me happy, like they say "bullshit baffles brains"

Looking forward to seeing the film anyway especialy in 3D
