INTERVIEWER: "The American version of The Shining is longer than the one that came out in the UK. Do you remember why Kubrick decided to cut some sequences?"

JAN HARLAN (KUBRICK'S PRODUCER): "Because it was not very well received. Warner Brothers thought it was very ambiguous. And maybe it was a bit long. Kubrick said, “OK that’s fine, we’ll make it a bit shorter!” He was not that stubborn. So we made it a bit shorter for the rest of the world. In America, it was the first release and it was then cut a bit."

and more than that i'd rather people discuss and figure out what is real and what is not in the film (if anything) and why certain things happened, and the correct timelines for the events. something new other than same old theories. so much has been said about room 237 but it's all speculation.

Sounds to me like America got THE REAL version, while everyone else/international got a THEY'LL HAVE TO SETTLE FOR THIS version.

Come at me, people who "like" the international version! Enjoy your worse, shorter version and bland British food. I'll enjoy the real version, and amazing American cuisine.

Maybe you should watch the short version first before criticizing it.

I own both versions, but I prefer the shorter one. I like some of the deleted scenes from the US version, but in the end it's mostly padding and not all that important for the story. The International version also has a better pace imo.

I have watched the shorter version once. I threw up in my mouth a lil bit.

JK.
It was still good, but I just love the American version

I’m going to rent the shorter cut on Amazon UK. I’m curious to see how it flows.

I think like someone else said, I believe shortening such a movie would take away from setting the mode of isolation and monotony that is a big part of the story.

I'm not a fan of multiple versions of movies, just as I hate the trend of releasing director's and extended cuts of movies. I don't even like the idea of deleted scenes being released. Movies should stand on their own with just one version, just like any other work of art used to be. If it doesn't go over well in another country, too bad.

You are aware of the fact that some movies get released against the wishes of the director, especially if one had to make cuts forced by the studio? This being a movie forum, I think you must be aware of it.

There's a big difference between being asked to shorten the film and being told to do so.

Of course. Why would you ask that based on what I wrote?

I'm aware of that. I'm just curious if Kubrick gave in to their requests or if he decided on the cuts all on his own.

On the contrary. By getting rid of the TVs, the sense of isolation is greater in the shorter version.

Anyway, the shorter version is better in practically every way. Just removing the skeleton scene makes the movie clearly better.

What's better is ultimately subjective.

Let me get this thread back on track.

What are your top 5 scenes in the movie. For me:

1. The whole "Give me the Bat" scene. From Wendy discovering Jacks work to Jack getting hit in the head.

2. Jack, Grady bathroom scene

3. Bar scene

4. Opening Credits

5. Wendy pissing off Jack while he's trying to work

After seeing your avatar, I thought you were going to pick a different scene.
