I just bought the Metal Gear Solid: The Essential Collection. It should be here Friday night from Amazon.

I haven't owned MGS in I don't know how long, I only rented MGS2 and I barely remember it at all, and only played MGS3 very quickly and then traded it in shortly after. It'll be good to have all these games again, I missed them.

MGS3's the only Metal Gear I've beaten on max difficulty (European Extreme) and only using tranq ammo on bosses for the dropped camouflage.

Yep, those bosses are real tough.

I am thinking about buying MGS4 (despite having never played a MGS before), and for people like me that could prove very helpful

Thanks !
Will do.

I haven't played MGS before either. I bought the Essentials Pack and put in MGS1 for about two nanoseconds.

The graphics were horrible and I decided that it wasn't worth the effort. I'd rather just read some quick blurbs on the story to this point and jump in with a solid game.

But, unlike most here, I'm more interested in MGS online.

I mean, it was a PS1 game. What were you expecting? I thought for it's time, it was a groundbreaking game.

Thanks Shin
Much appreciated. I know it won't quite replace the full game experience, but both time and finances resources being limited, it will do

I forgot how bad the game looked until I watched the Game Trailers videos. But if I want to play MGS1 again, I have the GameCube version, so it looks like MGS2 at least. And it has the super action cut scenes that are pretty entertaining. I would still have had the PS1 version, but I let someone borrow it and never got it back, but I am happy with Twin Snakes.

I remember anticipating it and watching everything about it when it came online and read every preview in all the magazines and when I got it I thought there is just no way graphics in games will ever be any better than this and looking back now it's just incredible how far games have advanced. I can't imagine what I'll be playing in that same time frame a few years from now.

I got the essential collection and finished MGS for the PS1 again and I now remember how fun games used to be. Now we get great eye candy games, but an empty and repetitive game(assassins creed, mass effect, even COD4 on single player). I can't wait to get MGS4. All the MGS games are on a whole different level than the big hits we have been getting. Well, I guess GTA4 is on par with what I hope MGS4 is going to be.

The 3 variations of my name yielded:

Gargantuan Rhinoceros

Gargantuan Mandrill

and oddest of all: Gargantuan Sea-Monkey!!

Just the same old linear shooter with some nice graphics. Now the multi player is awesome, but as far at the single player game goes, same old same old (other than the sniper level and the ac-130 level.) But even though the multi player does kick ass, BF2 for the computer totally spanks it and that game came out in 2005.

I totally agree with Whiz Dog. COD4 single player tasted like medicine.

I'm itching for GTA4 and MGS4 and the essentials collections. Might pick that one up and give it a try this Saturday. However, I wouldn't try to rush through the MGS titles (cramming for an exam). If it's addictive, I'll continue to play it. But if not, I'll just dabble around with it until MGS4 hits. I intend to play MGS4 seriously. Then, if I really like MGS4, I can replay the essentials package to see how it all got started. They're like prequels.

Normally, I'd wait to see if I like MGS4 first before buying the essentials, but I have a feeling that (as with Ratchet and Clank for the PS3), once I taste the next-gen version, I'd love to get the originals. And like Ratchet, I worry that the originals might not be available by then.

HOW LONG DOES ONE MGS TITLE TAKE TO PLAY? FOR INSTANCE, MGS1 THROUGH MGS3????

THANK YOU.

MGS 1 has two endings requiring two playthroughs and is as long as you allow it to be..

In the first I would stop go back to the start and raid the armory for additional goodies as my goal was to get the rank piranha and thats
for killing alot of people.

I would go back and start mining stuff for the fun of it... setting up traps killing people and heading back to my armory.. precious armory...

There is a choice in the game of if snake saves Meryl or Otagon.. if you leave the base with Otagon Meryl is dead. Each allow you to replay the game with a specific goodie, save Meryl and you will have bandanna which gives you infinite ammo, otagon gives you a stealth camo suit that makes you invisible.

MGS2 is short or as short as you let it be, its one of those alot of areas to explore and you might get side tracked farting around..

MGS3 again its as short as you let it be, and matters how much time you use trapping wild game, and how much you think out your assaults.
