RETROSPECTIVE

Missed the Metal Gear games leading up to MGS4? The Metal Gear Solid: Essential Collection (MGS, MGS2, MGS3) is now available for the PlayStation 2 and you can catch up using the Metal Gear Retrospective.

OVERVIEW

Marking the return of Hideo Kojima's legendary tactical espionage action series, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots features a cinematic experience and visual masterpiece that will redefine this landmark franchise as a revolutionary game for the PLAYSTATION®3 system. The game is the final chapter in the saga of Solid Snake which sends him around the world in pursuit of his arch nemesis, Liquid Ocelot. Armed with new gadgets and abilities, Solid Snake must shift the tides of war into his favor, using the chaos of the battlefield to infiltrate deep into enemy territory. In his globetrotting final mission, Snake must sneak deep into enemy locations in the Middle East, South America, and other corners of the earth to foil Liquid Ocelot's. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots includes the Metal Gear Online "Starter Pack", which is the full and complete multiplayer component of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots.
SOP or Sons of the Patriots is an advanced system that allows several members of a military unit to share each other's senses via the nanomachines inside their bodies. This provides a massive tactical advantage to whomever uses it. It's also able to provide other small functions, such as preventing PMC soldiers from firing their weapons at their clients and comrades. In 2014, Liquid Ocelot captures Naomi Hunter and forces her to create a third generation version of FOXDIE which can target specific nanomachines and/or SOP systems.

In Metal Gear Online the SOP system will allow players to see where their teammates are at any given time and send/receive automatic help messages to/from allies. The player can capture an enemy and hack into their SOP system to allow them to see where enemies are. The system can also prevent them from firing for a few seconds if they shoot one of their team-mates.

The Beauty and the Beast Unit are four women who suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder. The only way they can cope with the damage done to their minds is to become war machines. Their inner appearance is referred to as "Beauty", while their outer appearance is referred to as "Beast".
LIMITED EDITION

Featuring collectible packaging with exclusive artwork by famed Kojima Productions illustrator Yoji Shinkawa, the Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots Limited Edition will contain everything that is included with the Standard Edition as well as an additional Blu-ray disc featuring two "making of" documentaries and the Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots Soundtrack CD. The documentaries will include extensive interviews with Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima. The Limited Edition will be available exclusively at GameStop.

PLAYSTATION 3 HARDWARE BUNDLE

PLAYSTATION®3 System with 80GB HDD + Metal Gear Solid® 4: Guns of the Patriots + DUALSHOCK®3 wireless controller + PAIN downloadable game voucher

Hi all – Firstly, we’d like to thank you for helping us make the launch of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots a tremendous success, with a special thanks to the many of you who attended our midnight launches to support it. It was great to meet so many of you in person, and the some of the MGS related costumes were truly spectacular. We had a lot of fun, and we hope you did too.

Of course, the launch of MGS4 is just the beginning – with it now in your hands, surely you are finding that there is much to discover within the game itself. It’s packed with so much, in fact, that there is bound to be new revelations, strategies, and details in the coming months as everyone makes their way through every nook and cranny. Add in Metal Gear Online, with its endless and deep multiplayer game play, as well as new downloadable content forthcoming - there is truly so much more to come, with our continued support of MGS, that will extend well through this year.

With that, we are happy to reveal a very special surprise, upon the PLAYSTATION Store update tomorrow (Thursday June 19th) we will be releasing the Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots Database!

The MGS4 Database is a free, downloadable interactive application that contains the official knowledge base of everything that is Metal Gear, reaching all the way back to the very beginning of the franchise. Including complete storylines, character profiles, relationship diagrams, and much more! The MGS4 database is a great way to catch up for someone new to Metal Gear, as well as a useful resource for any veteran of the series, with complete official details on every aspect of the intricate Metal gear lore.

The MGS4 Database also contains a special feature – if you want to make use of the database, but have not yet fully played through MGS4 yet and are worried about spoilers – all MGS4 spoilers are “blacked out” until you’ve beaten MGS4. Give it a try!

But that’s not all, within MGS4, check out the EXTRAS option of the main menu (if you haven’t already). There’s already new, free downloadable content available for the game - with new camouflage and a new music track for the in game iPod. There will be more forthcoming, so be sure to check this often!

I think that if MGS4 and Heavenly Sword both make it out fall of this year Sony will get the tables to turn really quick. That will help them stand a chance against Halo 3. In 2008 Sony can follow up with FFXIII and GT5, what else will 360 have?

MGS seems to have a bigger fanbase than Halo anyway. It's certainly a more established franchise.

lol, I believe MGS should have a bigger fanbase, since the series has been out since. (1998) I love MGS, I wasn't impress with 2 or 3, but I'm looking forward to MG4.

I've been playing Metal Gear since the original around 86(?). When I was a kid I never knew how huge that game would grow to be. The story in the original wasn't nearly as good or complex as they are now, but they managed to keep them consistent.

well look at this interview with KOJIMA i realy do not think it will be MGS:4 going to the xbox360..based on his answers..it will be a totaly new game....

interview..with KOJIMA in JAN 2007...look at these Q: an look at KOJIMAS answers:

GP: Is MGS4 still planned as an exclusive PS3 game? Do you have any interest in Xbox 360 development?

Kojima: Well, yes, I do have strong interest in creating something for the Xbox 360. In the US and Europe, it is selling, and I think it will sell a lot this year as well. I'm a fan of Gears of War as well, it's very interesting.

Frankly speaking, I want to create something on the PC. It's a multi-platform [format]. I've been regularly studying work on the PC anyways, and I want to provide something as a world-wide platform because of the consequences with timing on the PlayStation platforms, MGS4 is actually for the PS3 only so far.

GP: Resistance: Fall of Man uses 22 GB [edit: recently changed to 16 GB] of Blu-ray storage. Is that necessary for next-gen development? Is that massive storage something you'll need to make MGS4?

Kojima: Right away. We'll need more.

GP: We recently spoke with Sony's Phil Harrison, who told us that he thinks PS3 games will soon use 50 GB. Do you agree with that prediction?

Kojima: Yes, I do. It's high-def, and just to make it high-def, the data requirements are huge.

Back in the days when I was working on 8-bit, 1 MB ROMs came out and I thought, "wow, great!" But it wasn't enough. When the CD-ROM came out, we thought we had so much space. But when we started to add sound, there was a lack of storage already. Even Blu-ray, I don't even feel that it expanded data so much. With cinematic, the space fills up right away. You may hear Blu-ray is huge, gigantic, 20 GB or so, but that's not really that big to us. One basic [gameplay] frame with HD and 5.1 takes up so much space that the capacity will become too small in no time. If we maintain the same level of graphics and sound as the PS2, then Blu-ray is spacious. But that's not the case.

From that interview...

Quote:
"The PS3 is like the theatre, it's a little bit high-priced but it has to be high quality as well. The 360 is a DVD, it still needs to be high quality but you need more variations, while the Wii is almost like a TV channel, because every game you have it with your family".

"But like I said, MGS4 is aimed for the movie theatre, it's aimed for the PS3, so the game's scenario and graphics need this theatre-type hardware. It's when a producer has a game that can work on the 'DVD level' that a game will go multiplatform", he says. Sorry kids. Your "OMGMGS4360" banners will have to come out another day.

HALO 3 is not that impressive, just upgraded graphics and new vehicles. Check out some of the videos on the Beta Multiplayer. Haze looks better than HALO, so look for Haze to beat out HALO 3.

Well, apart from the camera shake, depth of field changes etc, YES!

Watch some MGS3 Snake Eater trailers and gameplay footage videos to see how things differ.

What the heck is MTG?

EBgames, lists MGS4 for 2008.

The MGS4 trailers show 2007. Konami hasnt reported that the title has been delayed.

So right now, officially, MGS4 will come out in 2007.

Besides, it would not be the first time, EBgames is wrong in the release date.

Well, you won't have to look hard to dig up a post of mine describing how much I hate Halo, so trust me I know.

Fact is though, Halo has incredible amount of hype, and as far as socially acceptable games go, there is none better atm. You can't go to a college or military dorm and not run into tons of people who have played it. It's just not going to happen. Halo series is just THE game to play in the public's eye.

My opinion of the game is far different, and I think that it is the most over-hyped series ever. It's story and gameply have been done better in countless games, but for some reason this game just clicks.

Sony needs something with the comparable hype to go up against Halo 3 to not get lost in the shuffle. MGS4 can do that, maybe even Killzone 2 and Heavenly Sword. I think Drake and Haze will be much better games, but they won't keep Sony afloat against Halo's hype is all I'm saying. I don't want to see another Christmas dominated by Microsoft.

Wow...

I also can not wait for this historical memorial day
when mgs4 comes out.

Are we allowed to raise our "OMGMGS4 4 PS3" banners
when it comes out?
