I shouldn't have to response to posts like this but I feel that I was unclear on my stance on the formats.

If a studio can bunny jump like that I don't feel to comfortable in spending to much money on High Def right now, and that is my choice to make. Many of the movies I owned were low on extras, video or audio (and some were not to good as movies), so I decided that I was going to sell them of and only purchase top movies with lots of extras and value from now on. The Paramount news just woke me up and made me realize that I was spending way to much money on a unsure thing, it did not drive me to despair.

I will prefer BD over DVD as long as it is superior in all departments, but I will not be buying bare bone Fox BD's to twice the cost of a fully featured DVD any more (or any other studios bare bone for that matter). I will be much more selective and only purchase fully loaded releases of movies I really love, that way I won't be waisting to much money on my format of choice and that would kind of qualify as standing on the sideline (compared to before).

With that said maybe you see that it is understandable for me to ask if the Seinfeld collection is coming to BD because I would still prefer it over DVD?

So Sony, bring on Seinfeld, Taxi Driver, Snatch, Das Boot, As Good As It Gets, Dr. Strangelove, Jacob's Ladder, Groundhog Day and make them really worth buying!

Current disk releases can only be decoded by current and future players internally; while external decoding is only possible with future releases.
What is the truth on this stuff?
It's not the discs but the players themselves that won't pass these codecs bitstream. It has to do with the chipset and version of HDMI. I'm sure one of the technical insiders can fill you in with those details. But, rest assured, when the players that do come out that can pass the "new" codecs bitstream, all of you're previous discs will output the TrueHD and DTSHDMA streams just fine.

Btw, there is not one player out as of now, BD and HD DVD, that has the ability to pass these codecs bitstream.

Like most stubborn HD DVD supporters, your friend is clueless. Tell him to read the "Profiles" section of this page: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blu-ray_disc.

I'm not an insider, but maybe your friend is thinking of HD DVDs authored in Advanced Content mode. Those discs require in-player audio decoding. The usefulness of passing bitstreams to 1.3 receivers from these types of discs is anyone's guess at this point, but an upcoming Toshiba firmware will allow the HD-XA2 to do just that, so we shall see.

As far as I know, BDs do not have such constraints due to authoring mode.

Do you have any contacts over at SCE, and can you give them some feedback?

If so, here goes...

Its great that they turned on the PS3's abily to recognize media servers, it truly sets the device ahead of the pack of standalones, making it a legitimate media center. The only negative is the support (or lack there of) of not necessarily codecs, but of packages. It is great that it supports the MPEG2 and MPEG4 codecs (including h264 and x264) but would it be possible for them to expand the support of packages to include matroska files (.mkv)

For those that don't know, .mkv files are a completely open source package format which allows for video, audio and subtitle information packaged into a single file. Because it is simply a package, the video and audio codecs can be pretty much anything, although the most common that I have seen is .mkv using mpeg4 and AC3.

TIA for getting the feedback to them.

Cheers,
Scott

While I agree that the PS3 needs a much larger variety of codec and container support (especially for local storage and USB devices), there is a solution for your problem Iceman: get TVersity from http://tversity.com/home . It'll do transcoding of codecs in realtime and also supports mkv and various other file formats. If you're using unix Mediatomb also supports transcoding in the latest versions, but you'll have to build and compile it on your own.

Lets face it - there's always going to be a lot more file formats out there than the PS3 can handle. I do have one request though - is it possible to add support for pass-through of multichannel AC3 or DTS to the DLNA client?

Hi, newb escapee - and fence-sitter - here from AVS. Can anyone point me toward guidelines on posting? I've read the FAQ and it was very generic.

Best, Jeff

Jeff, first, probabably not a good idea to pick a thread for questions to, and answers from insiders

A good rule of thumb is to search first to see if your question has been answered, then find a thread that seems applicable, if not start an applicable thread, I don't think there is a minimum post count to start a thread

Other good rules of thumb:
Play nice
Read more than you write
Don't pick fights, troll, or spread FUD

Frode, Already got it - Tversity is not necessarily the answer its off topic, so check your PMs.

Sorry, I'm fresh from the AVS Insiders thread and beamed directly here.

Never trolling or FUDding. Might seek knowledge, though, in a pointed way. I promise, I'll be a good citizen.

At large question: Is there a unified list of soon-to-be-released BD players and their profile, um . . .profile? Or is it best just to keep one's ear to the ground?

edit: I am headed to the first page and will read the entire thread.
