What difference is night and day? The difference between watching an upscaled BD on a 4k display and watching the same BD on 1080p set?

That seems somewhat counterintuitive given that all the non-resolution benefits of UHD don't come into play in that situation and even increased resolution only sort of comes into play.

It will be fine when and if Hollywood moves back towards the GIANT, wall-to-wall screens that were prevalent in the past and true 8k cinema cameras, 8k workflows, and 8k projectors are released.

Otherwise, it's just Japan going tech-crazy again.

If some movies get 4k remasters exclusive to UHD though it will be worth getting the player and disc just to see those masters, IMO. I won't have a 4k TV for years probably but if Die Hard comes exclusively to UHD with a 4k remaster you can bet I'll be getting a UHD player to own it.

This is assuming UHD takes off well enough to last a while, of course. If it crashes and burns like S-VHS then I'd just wait for the inevitable BD release.

I've been led to believe IMAX 15/70 is capable of well over 8K.

Modern IMAX negative certainly is (how much of that ends up on the screen is another question). That is the kind of specialty venue where 8K might be beneficial. For regular screens, people simply sit too far. Even in IMAX, people seem quite happy watching 2k content from the farther half of the auditorium.

When I do get a 4k Tv... ya know, when all the Specs have been fully finalized, I plan on getting a 70 or 80 inch screen.

I have a few quick question that you guys would know the answers to a lot more than I.

1 - Curved or Flat Panel?
2 - Sitting Distance?

I forgot my other questions... If and when I remember, I'll ask...

1) A curved flat panel is really not necessary IMHO until you have a very large front projection system to help alleviate light fall off on the edges and to counteract anamorphic lens distortions on a scope ratio projection screen.

I'd go flat, especially if you care about viewing angles. Curved is just a gimmick, in my opinion - it's only beneficial when the display is absolutely huge and the curve is only slight.

I think the general rule is 1.5x screen width, although it's down to personal preference really.

It was a clear difference to me and I am looking forward to it.

Sorry if this had been asked but will you be able to play DVD's on UltraHD Blu-Ray players? Also will you be able to play UltraHD Blu's on a regular Blu-Ray player?

I'm not sure hence why i wrote not sure They are already playing UHDBD and BD. I just don't see why there would be a need for a third format, also the press release didn't mention anything about DVD. just BD being abled to be watched on UHD players

I already notice the difference between regular blu-ray and 4k optimized blu-ray, so why wouldn't I notice the difference between a 4k player and a blu-ray player on a 1080p TV?

Some titles are only available on DVD. Currently most people who watch movies on Blu-ray and DVD use just a Blu-ray player to watch both. UHDBD players should be able to replace existing Blu-ray players so they'd need DVD playback to do so.

Most movies that got "mastered in 4K" Blu-ray discs were ones that were poorly mastered for their initial release. If a UHD Blu-ray version has a superior master than the Blu-ray version it will probably look much better, even on a 1080p TV. But if the Blu-ray was already well made than they'll likely look very similar on a 1080p TV.

If some 1080p TVs support HDR in the future than most UHD Blu-ray movies will look superior to their Blu-ray counterparts on those TVs. But I don't expect that to be the case, you'll probably have to buy 4K TVs just to get HDR.

I wonder if the first wave of titles will be along the lines of what the first releases were like for DVD and Blu-Ray....ie, stuff I have no interest in buying.

eh i dunno, they pretty much let everybody know not to panic on buying a whole new bluray collection because UHD will be able to play BDs. Wouldn't you think that they would say the same about DVDs? I guess we will find out soon enough but when talking about playback it would have made sense to say "you can play Blurays and DVDs on the UHD BD player" instead they just say you can play blurays.
