That's untrue. It depends on your seating distance. I just bought a 55" SUHD Samsung and the difference is noticeable... especially contrast and color fidelity. If the source is well mastered, the detail is also much improved.

Well I'm just going on an article I read somewhere, I'll find it and post the link. Sure it maybe a bit noticeable, but the actual full benefit of UHD is what I'm talking about. Not spending £2k on TV, player, etc for 50-60% of potential and slight upgrade to what I see as high quality in the list of movies in my original post. Then factor in the cost of rebuing films at $20-$40 a pop. Is it worth rebuing the almost perfect Alien set at maybe 5 times its bd price?

Once you can get 100% benefit for a sensible price, I could be in. By then there will be something else on the horizon.

I think you're trying to justify your position. It's unfounded unless you have poor eyesight.

This is what gives me pause right now as well. It's sort of like how the 1080p capabilities caught on so soon after 720p was announced.

I think you'll see 8K scaling soon enough, but nothing native for a long time.

8k for consumer use... now that is overkill. Great for the cinema if there is a Renaissance in giant screen cinematography.

This time UHD should be perfected with full Rec. 2020 color when that's ironed out, 12 bit, 4:4:4, superior visually lossless compression, etc. etc.

For 99.9999% of people that would be perfection.

Yeah I think 8K is definitely more for marketing purposes and non consumer uses.

I'm not saying I'll never buy in to Ultra HD in the future (never say never), but it would be more interesting if I wasn't completely satisfied with 1080p. I am, so I don't see the point.

I can see a point if movies that have problematic transfers on ordinary blu ray come out on UHD blu ray in true 4K while the ordinary blu rays remain problematic. For example, if A Clockwork Orange came out in UHD where they used the true 4K master and the ordinary blu ray wasn't upgraded by Warner.

I like what this guys says. There are many others which show the same. Slight difference and you need a huge screen. To fully benefit you will spend thousands IF it is even possible to buy the size and have the seating distance to enjoy.

Hey, good luck to you and anyone who does go for it. As long as you're happy and it's your money. But don't say there isn't evidence against buying for the normal consumer.

I'm currently...out and BD is looking good enough for me.

Again, if you don't see it for yourself and make up your own mind, and solely rely on somebody else's opinion then, well... what can I say?

I agree there is an improvement, but to get the full benefit it's not worth it for me.

If you wish to replace your 300+ BDs at $30 a pop plus thousands on a system and have a 60ft lounge etc then cool. As I said enjoy, it's your cash.

Oh, I doubt I'll be re-buying all my discs. I'll take things on a title by title basis.

For one thing, I want immersive surround (Atmos and X) and will be purchasing a Marantz or Yamaha processor soon, so that feature will probably (from everything I've gathered) be more prevalent on UHD Blu-ray releases.

Sooo...

It doesn't help that the official name of the format is "Ultra HD Blu-ray".

Has anyone else noticed how all the formats from the past that bear the name of a previous format in it have for whatever reason failed?

D-VHS
SACD
HD DVD

People actually think 8K is a thing that will happen? It might conceivably be useful for specialty exhibition formats, but for conventional movie screens - between the lenses in your eye, camera, and projector, and the distance at which it's comfortable to watch a film, it's way beyond overkill.

I still think it's a niche option due to 65/70mm films. I would love to see Lawrence of Arabia, Patton, or 2001: A Space Odyssey in 8K.

It would be pointless. I've seen LoA and Ben Hur in (very high quality) 4K projection and pixels are not a limiting factor.

You can refuse to believe it all you want,Blu-ray's market share is very niche, this does not stop me loving the things any less.
