Just read the news, what a shame. Amazon shipped mine today. The more I read the more I want to return for refund. This was a lot of money and I have the Ausie set.

Again, except driving away future buyers and pre-orderers while providing no solution at all, there is 0 reason for Inidicator to aknowledge so early the issue.
There probably aren't many titles plagued with a wrong master that was quickly replaced. The only one I know is Gladiator, but that was a post production issue, not a source one, and it was a studio, and it still took numerous months.

If people believe something will be aknowledge quickly, they really have the wrong expectations and understanding of how works the industry. I'm not saying it's a good thing, I'm saying it would currently do more harm than good.

Note also that Indicator quickly fixed their 2 past issues. Christine even had the replacement discs being prepared before people started feedbacking the issue.

I ordered for the Aussie disc of Golden Voyage of Sinbad today, seeing that the Indicator disc is near identical in visual quality (so I don't have to wait and see if they announce a separate release), and that was the only movie I wanted to upgrade in the Sinbad set.

It's a shame and I understand the reasons tenia gives for the non-responsive attitude, but for who do know the issue, their reputation will certainly take a blow.

Blu_Beard exactly describes my feelings and actions:

I will delay my purchase of the box (if I purchase it) but I'd wait before having a standard more negative attitude towards Indicator. This is so far a one-off issue, Indicator themselves might still be currently investigating what happened, so I dont want to rush any change of my attitude towards their work.

That looks better more than Eye of the Tiger looks worse, so I think I'll end up happy with my purchase.

Definitely more detailed.

They give with one hand, take away with the other. Their reputation has taken a massive knock from my point of view with the lack of response and frustrating Maybot style diversions that answer the question they want to answer, not the one that was asked. If they just owned up to having used the wrong master for whatever reason, whether they replaced it or not would cover up the cracks for me. Lying or avoiding the issue is a definite no-no in my book even if pretty much all labels are guilty of it at some point. For example, I no longer pre-order Kino titles but wait for reviews as I just can't trust them not to screw up and deny anything is wrong. Honesty is always best.

I'm getting worried about their long rumoured Hammer set now. Those Columbia masters are a very mixed bag and they'd need to be sure of getting the very best materials, not just what Sony hand over.

No one is expecting the issue to be fixed immediately, or an immediate replacement program. But they are aware of the complaints and downright ignoring customers comments while praising the set themselves. Trying to divert the question with answers about 7th Voyage instead of simply saying "we are aware of the complaints and will looking the issue" is a slap in the face to the people who give them money and keep them in business. That's why there is 100% reason for them to acknowledge that there might be an issue, and it doesn't hurt them to say it. It only hurts them if they don't.

See I agree with tenia here, they have to incentivize sales and if they say "We have a dated master for one of the films and it's outside of our control to fix right now", then their sales would take a hit.

That undeniably sucks from a consumer point of view, but I do expected them to see this addressed in a reasonable fashion . Besides, both Criterion (Children of Paradise, Madame de) and Arrow (Female Prisoner Scorpion, Phantom of the Paradise) have had problems with masters like this.

Not really the same thing, both Arrow and Criterion put out the only masters available at the time (they were just compromised restorations). Indicator advertised a new restoration which is available elsewhere but put out an old master.

Seventh Voyage: There's a very fine mosquito effect to the picture, especially noticeable against shots of the blue sky. It may be film grain, but I've a suspicion that it's digital in origin. I couldn't say for sure, though. Otherwise, the film looks surprisingly modern; not like a Fifties film in terms of colour.

Golden Voyage: Looks pretty good. Not sure the 1.66:1 ratio is correct, though. It certainly wouldn't have been shown in cinemas like that.

Eye of the Tiger: That grain has returned a little, but I had to search for it in most shots. More concerning to me was the way the film twitched. This effect was common in cinemas and on TV in the days of 35mm film (caused, I think, by the sprocket holes in the celluloid) but these days there are ways to stabilise a picture so it's odd to see a modern Blu-Ray with old-school film twitch. I suspect I'll be able to ignore this when watching the film, but it shouldn't really be there. Otherwise, the picture seems bright and sharp.

True for the first three (especially Madame de, which has gone on a four year journey from Criterion and Gaumont to BFI to improve the image.), but if I recall Phantom had a master that was going around that ended up more contrast boosted on the Arrow disc compared to the Shout Factory release (they were released within six months of each other), there was a similar tone to this thread over at CF.org when the caps for that were released.

What I was trying to say to say is that other companies have had similar problems and have addressed them where they can, and that taking them at their word that these were the masters supplied by Sony they are probably doing what they can to asses the situation. If they are not able to fix it (compare this situation of rights to the very technical nature of the Christine and Fat City problems) then they will hold them to the same account as a company like Arrow and scrutinize their output but still look forward to them.

It's not like they have to make a big PR thing out of it. However, it's bad PR not to even acknowledge it.

Most won't even realise, many here don't care and are happy with the punchier grade on the old master and it would placate those who do care. I think they'll lose more day one sales on future titles that they would on Sinbad by just admitting they've got a different master to the one advertised.

...Surely that would be even worse than loss of sales on just this box-set.
